Default Tracking a Targa, Porche DE events

Any opinions on tracking an 84 Targa requested. Initial Green/Yellow then Blue group expected in short order since some DE experience.
Thinking the AirCooled coupes are appropriate but not sure about Targa. Read the Targa loop provides structural support and of course some rollbar like protection. Any front strut bracing or minor suspension mods needed. Car is stock minus cat at this time.
Thank you.

Ed Hughes did DE with his '84 Targa all the time. Ed was a canyon carving fool in that thing. Won't be long until you are going to want stiffer Tbars and dampers, strut brace and turbo tie rods. .....and all the stuff my car has.

You won't hurt it, if that's what you mean. I've done a couple of DE events in mine, although always in the Green group. I had an instructor once that club raced a Targa, although I'm sure the full cage made a big difference in his application.

I think most regions will require you to run with the top on. I have a triangle-style front strut brace that I thought made a noticeable difference, but I know that was probably all in my head.

Sure. And not even talking about a developed car in what I ended up with in Ruby. Plenty of guys through maybe 10 years ago ran them out here in very limited prep classes of our Time Trial series. Basically cars that ran a dampers, larger rear bar + R comps, and whatever you could optimize on ride height/alignment.

Sure you can, fun cars (I have an 88 Targa)

But you can also have a lot of fun (for less money) in a 944

Watched a friend roll his 70 targa that had a roll bar in it at Grattan many years ago, he replaced with a coupe.

Thanks for quick responses and some items I would probably want to add/replace on the car. I definitely plan to run with top in place , since I have never removed it since purchase anyway.
I was considering selling and buying a coupe for DE but current (even high miles SC and older coupes) prices are high and seem to be climbing every couple months.
Thanks again.

Track days are not competitive. This means there is no advantage or disadvantage to your car. No one wins at a track day. It's all about just having fun.

On the other hand we're getting so many Cup cars and GT3s that the fun isn't there for the older cars. You spend the whole day doing point-bys.

The day of the air-cooled 911 at the track is coming to an end. At one time we used to have some 356 Porsches come out to play. They're non-existent today. The same with the long-hoods.

I would say take it out and have fun. One of my best memories in your area was the banking at Pocono. There is nothing like coming out of turn 3 and hitting that huge front straight.

Before the Boxsters and 996s and GT3s took over the DE, you could see air cooled targas every weekend at the track. It's not because they suck that they are gone, its because most people are DEing newer cars these days. Have fun. Any 3.2 Carrera on track is a hoot.

Best of both worlds, keep your Targa, and buy this 944.

Take it out, have fun and see how it goes. There is no need to overthink it at this point.

Thanks again for additional comments. RLers with DE experience make great points.
My last DE event about yr ago I was getting lapped in my 350hsp 2003 C4S by what appeared to be a 18 year old kid in his parents biturbo Merc, so guess the 84 Targa would take being even more humble.

It can still be fun even if you're pointing people by all the time. I did a HPD event last june with a stock Fiat 500 Abarth at Road A (!!!). I was the second slowest car in the group (there was a Miata running several seconds off my pace) and I got eaten up by all those RSs and Z06s but still had a total blast. If the run group is made of sensible mature people, all will be happy.

I've seen even funkier cars do track days. An old 70's Datsun, a Jetta diesel, etc. Some yellow renault spec racers. Everyone was cool though.
