Wow! That is quite the transormation. Makes me wonder why people would transform it into a slantnose in the first place.

 

Because the cars were worth $1.99 at the time, no one wanted them (let alone would spend 2-3X what they were worth to restore them stock), and there was customer demand to allow us to make money doing the conversions.

In any case, so glad to see there was enough left + current market forces to justify bringing this car back.

(I vividly remember a salvager taking a fully rust free, high mile, but all there and in good shape '70T for $2K, yet wouldn't sell it to me as-is for $3K--all he cared about was the profit from selling parts.)

You would have been like everyone else and not given a ____ about crapped out old 911s. As recent as '95 a good friend of mine found a ~80KM '73 RS quasi-lightweight that was a color changed to Grand Prix White from Sepia Brown for......$25K. That was a good car we fiddled with to make into a competent autocrosser. I sold my '73S track rat that was an honest fully optioned car for all the money there was in '01 at $20K.

So, figure what the garden variety Ts in average shape were worth. A basis for updating/hacking was about all.

In 1992 I was looking for a 911 with just a $10K budget. I was staying away from the mid-year cars, so I figured my only option was 1973 or older. In Hemmings I found a nice 1970 911T Targa in Indiana for I think $8K, and sent a deposit. Before I could fly out to drive it home, the seller changed his mind and sent my money back.

Lately I've been wondering where I'd be now if I got that car. Not being able to afford a full restoration, it wouldn't surprise me if I would have sold it and moved up to a mint 3.2 Carrera at some point.
