Default Spare tire air pump?

I embarrassed to admit this, but after owning my '87 911 for over two years, I think I discovered the air pump for the spare is missing. When I bought the car, I must have spaced out on the fact it should have one. So, some advice is needed. 1) what does the oem pump look like and where is it ordinarily stored? I looked in all the likely nooks and crannies by the spare but no luck (the jack and a complete tool kit is there!). 2) Is an oem pump required? Considering it may never be used (it's been 20 years and 100s of thousands of miles since I was last caught on the roadside with a flat), I'm a bit reluctant to spill big $ on this item. The car is v. nice, but I don't concourse it, so originality is not an issue. 3) If an oem pump is best, are they commonly available from dismantlers? Price? 3) If a P - pump is not required, any opinions on a nice aftermarket pump, and/or any specifications I should look for? Many thanks once again.

If you want nto buy a pump the smallest and lightest seems to be the one I have in my 01 C4. If you don't have A/C the pump may be stowed in the well under the trunk mat.

Most are in their own black case that is say about 12" by 12" by 5" with Porsche stamped on the case. Open it up and their is a pump, hose, needles for things like ***** etc. I just bought one that was missing off of ebay for 60 bucks (there are usually at least one for sale all the time). They just sit in the trunk space. You can also buy one of the smaller aftermarket units (like interdynamics) for around 50 bucks. All of them just plug into the cigarette lighter.

There is a url for one for sale right now on ebay, it will show you what it looks like.

For several years, I used a small Coleman air pump, came in it's own black plastic case, no logo. Never had to use it, either.

If you've got AAA or other roadside service then you don't need any pump - As long as you don't mind waiting for the tow truck to arrive with their compressed air if you ever get a flat. I just bought a nice little Coleman pump off eBay: Pump with built-in flashlight and red cover to make it also a red flashing light if broken down on a dark road. I think that it was about $15 including shipping.

Thanks for the opinions here. I may check e-bay again, or maybe an aftermarket pump. I've seen a few nice ones for not a lot of money. Hope the PO is enjoying his Porsche Pump...

I just solved the same problem on my recently aquired '88.
$9.95 at WalMart for a Campbell Hausfeld 250psi unit.

Mike, I thought you had left a digit out of your price for that Campbell Hausfeld pump at Walmart. That is until I visited my local W-mart. Wow, solved my problem for $9.95. Thanks! - Jim

I ditched the spare tire for weight and just keep a can of fix a flat in the front trunk.
