Default Ouch... sorry to hear about it...

Hi Doug,

I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune. I also have a 88 CE cab, so I feel your pain! To my untrained eye the damage doesn't look too bad. In any case, if you decide to keep the car and part it out please contact me, I need a few odds and ends.

Thank you.

I would guess you should be able to get atleast $5K for the motor, and $1000 for the trani, so it is clearly worth the $6K.

If the seats are in good shape, I would be interested, I too have a 1988 Commerative edition, however my drivers seat is ripped. I would also be interested in the carpet set...

try to save it if at all possible. i'd hate to see such a beautiful car taken to the junkyard. if you do part it out, i'd also be interested in some stuff though. bryan has a point, couldn't you take it to a frame shop, have it straightened, and then buy some 930 fenders?

Buy the car...you can part it out for more than $6,000. And it will be fun taking all those parts off the car...1,000 ways to take them off, only one (1) right way to put them on!!!!

two years ago. I had similar damage on an '86 Targa (48K miles), only the front was damaged as well. I fought with both my insurance company and the at fault driver's company. Both companies offered me about the same in settlement - $24,000 and I could buy it back for about the same ~$6,000.

I negotiated with both of them, used the PCA valuation service, remained very patient and ended up getting over $30,000. I was only asking for $27,000. Anyway, when they went on my settlement they also went up on the buy back amount, as it was a percentage.

I bought the car back for a friend. He parted out some of it for about $1,000, then sold the engine for what he paid me, kept the brain and wiring, and gave the chassis to a mechanic in exchange for an engine swap.

It's all a gamble and a lot of your time...

DC AUtomotive asked me how much I wanted and I told them 8k would be nice and they said cool. They are reviewing the estimate and etc., but have the seen the pictures. I quess I made an extra $ 2,000 by just making one phone call.

Different scenario when someone else causes your wreck. I caused my own wreck and I am bound by the terms of the contract between me and my insurance company. If someone else hit me, I would have gotten $ 30 to $ 35k no problem.

Rookie mistake. Driving a 911 too fast in a driving rain storm with crappy and partially worn tires that fit on those 15 inch rims. I hit a build-up of water on the interstate/highway and the car hydroplanned. The rear end started to swing out and I was gone. It spun what fell like 2 1/2 or 3 times before striking a light pole and a small dirt embankment behind the light pole. I am not sure of the exact speed, but I was going about the same speed as everyone else and had slowed down when the bottom fell out of the sky.

I knocked the light pole directly across 2 1/2 of the 3 lanes in rush hour traffic in storm and luckily no-one else was involved in the accident. Blocked up the highway for miles I heard. My wife drove by and asked the cops at the scene where they had taken me and she said traffick was backed up about two (2) miles. Unbelievable that the pole did not hit another car or that a bunch of rear enders did not happen when everyone had to stop because of the pole lying across the highway.

Doug,

Glad you are okay and that no one else was hurt. Thanks for sharing your experience, it serves us all as a good reminder.

Doug,

I don't know how you got an estimate to fix this for 25K. I just did the same thing to an SC and my estimate is less than 4K, including paint for the entire car. I didn't have any engine or suspension damage, you might.

I'd get an estimate from a body shop that specializes in older Porsches. They are hard to find, but a lot less than a dealer or someone who is addicted to insurance money.

If you part it out, I need some wheels.

I had two estimates. The 25k was from a guys that specializes in Porsches and does alot of Porsche restoration work. Nationwide's estimate was 23k.

If you were in the car during the wreck, I'd wait a few months tosettle any injury claim, I had a rearender and after 2-3 months, I had a big disc problem in my neck. the whiplash problem is real so don't try to get it over with. You can settle the property and injury separately.
