Very interesting thread!
As for me I don't care where the price of my 86 carrera coupe will going in the future, I will keep it as long as I have fun with it,if the day of sale is coming
a possible price dump will not affect me that much
Different story is my 993 Turbo bought in 2009,
The high price that some peolpe is ready to pay for such beauty makes me nervous about driving and enjoying it
a possible sharp fall in price would hurt my wallet as I could spent the money for another toy to enjoy in retirement

for sure with that TT .. would make my nervous even driving around ...

But i was of course speaking in general terms of air cooled 911s up to 89 in my earlier posts. .

Or both!
It's not that they don't see value in older stuff, quite the opposite, hipsters are very much into 'retro' stuff of all description. It's that they don't see value in cars, other than for going from point a to point b. It's a white domestic appliance. For every Raphael Orlove there are 100 Pajama Boys.

It's totally a collector car. Look at this one, it's museum quality.

Sloan is known for low milage expensive cars

And it's a subjective discussion anyway. But I doubt any serious car collector has a 911sc among his Bugatti. Ferrari's and Jensen interceptors.

I bet you Seinfeld has got at least one SC and a middie.

There are all sorts of collectors and each is operating on a different bandwidth depending on how deep their pockets are. As it happens I do have a Jensen Interceptor and almost pulled the trigger on a 40,000 mile SC at the turn of the year. SC's have quite a loyal following by enthusiasts even if they don't quite appeal to the banker investor TT/RS type.

You are right about that! Just the other day I saw a hipster wearing an old Casio broken digital watch flashing 12:00... Oh the irony!

True story!

I don't care if that one car is a time capsule, no garden variety SC is a collector car. Neither is any garden variety mid-year or later Carrera.

The only 911 cars that have attained collector status are ones that have special interest and that are exceedingly rare. Examples are 65 911, the 73 Carrera RS, the 87-88 Club Sport, 89-94 Speedster, 993 RS and a couple others.

There are far too many regular SCs and Carreras out there for them to reach collector status any time in the foreseeable future.

And I'll gladly take you up on your bet that Seinfeld has an SC. He wouldn't waste his time or storage space on a car that was built in the tens of thousands.

Default Air cooled values down the road....

When I purchased my SC I didn't look at it as an investment although it has given me years of driving pleasure and has appreciated over that time! I can't complain about that. Not that this is what the future holds for an 80's 911, but one should remember that the 356 was viewed as not much more than a VW Beetle for many years and is now quite valuable - even though it was a high production car (around 80,000 cars I believe). Many were left to rust because of the perceived lack of value which has helped reduce the numbers, which has reduced supply, but there are still many out there. Other examples of 911's that were once viewed as lesser models were the 74-77 and the 964. Both of these cars developed value over the past 5 years that have outpaced models like the SC and Carrera, models that for many years received praise as the best models of the era. Back when I got my SC, 2.7'a were cheap - even the Carrera variant was relatively cheap and the 964 continued to come down in value. So unless you have a crystal ball you never know what the public demand will be several years into the future. Either way - drive and enjoy them!

I guess we disagree on what 'collector status' means. To you it seems it means 'worth a ton of money'. For me, it means a car you buy just for the sake of having that model among the other cars you own, despite the fact that it's cheapo and mass produced. Plenty of Porsche collections out there that feature every model of air-cooled 911 (or every 911 model altogether), which among their pieces include the puny SCs, middies and 3.2s.
