1987 Targa Purchase Advice
Hey, folks -
A local dealer has a blue on brown/red 1987 Targa with 143K miles for sale. The car is a one-owner, and they did a decent amount of suspension work prior to putting up for sale. I am awaiting the full list of work, but I believe new bearings and tires were included. I took the car for a spin and it pulls strongly and shifts well.
Couple of items that stick out. It needs a paint job. So there is $7k minimum. It also needs the roof to be refinished. I might be able to do that myself with the help of Pelican, but not definite.
Asking around $29K.
What do folks think? I would PPI the car before purchase, but they want an agreed upon price before releasing for the PPI.
I appreciate your help!

i think 29 is steep but what do i know
you do not agree on a price before PPI unless they agree the PPI will afect price on things found they did not disclose ...
eg
"well its priced this way because it has bad tires " .. thats fair ..
if you agree on x price and ppi reveals worn bushings for example, that they didn't divulge , they need to adjust .. well, not need i guess ..

Hi:
Who's paying for the PPI? Why do you have to talk price without that in your hand? If you can, take it to an Indy for the PPI. If not, you are paying for the PPI like a service. You own it.
What about the clutch and engine - any records? There are plenty of folks who refurb the tops, but you may have to go further with new rubber etc. $7K may cover the paint, but you may want to plan on a bit more for new rubber seals/rubber/striping etc. If the exterior is that bad, you also can plan on $750 to refinish the Fuchs.
Being resolved to spending money for looks is great (as well as it not being great cosmetically, they sell slower). Get the PPI and study all the service receipts. Yes, I think it may be a tad high on the price. Rest assured, the dealer beat the cr@p out of the seller.

If it were me, I'd look elsewhere because of this. The engine may need a top-end rebuild and it may need a new clutch, etc. So now and with the paint, you've got a $50K car. It may have unseen accident damage that affects performance. How's the interior?

I would never agree to a price before reviewing the PPI and all of the records for the car. BTW, I hope the PPI was not done by a shop the selling dealer recommended. Lots of Targas for sale at good prices. Don't be an impulsive buyer - surest way to get taken.
