Default Help needed to listen to a partential purchase

Hi guys, I'm still looking for my first 911, I am based in the UK but can't find my way into owning a classic 911 on my budget buying a UK car.I have agreed a price on a car in America and the seller has sent me many pictures, plus a video so could hear the car running. It's a 1980 turbo bodied 3.0 911 flat nose, to me the engine sounds a little course on the video the seller has sent, would anyone be able to have a listen and tell there views I could email the file unless I can upload it to rennlist? It's 12mb, many thanks rich.

They aren't the smoothest, quietest, cars at idle. My 3.2 is a symphony of whirling, mechanical bits. My 993 is somewhat smoother but the water cooled versions are much quieter. Cheers

I know I'm off topic, but if I can offer a bit of unsolicited advice, if you're new to Porsche and on a budget, not sure if it's a great idea to buy a car like that, from three thousand miles away.

At the very least, why don't you put up an ad asking for a "Rennfax", where a local forum member goes check out the car in person for you? That might save you some very bad surprises. Particularly on a turbo wide body slantnose conversion car, no offense to those who dig those things.

Where's the car located?

The car is in northbrook, illinois, I have owned a couple 928's, over 15 years so have plenty of mechanical hands on experience and always maintain the cars my self, just sounds a bit bottom endy to me, I have only looked at three 911's with this engine, was hoping someone could have a listen otherwise I think I may have send an independent or local mechanic to look at the car, like you say unless someone on rennlist is local?

definitely non stock muffler adding to the " bottom end noise"

I hear a little bit of a whine too, may be nothing or may be an alt bearing , either way not a big deal .
I would second the notion of being very very carful of such a modified car though.

Thank you for looking, I'm really not concerned about minor things like alternator bearing etc, that would be fine and and easy fix, so appreciate your views re big end, would love it if I had a few more people comment on the engine for piece of mind

its going to be difficult to diagnose anything with such a booming sound , but does not sound a lot different from my 3.0. You could have has him rev it a little too. personally if I were selling id have a gopro vid of me driving it and going through the gears too.
don't worry , others will chime in as the west coast wakes up .

I definitely don't have the broad 911 experience of others on this list, but that car sounds terrible to me. I would not take a chance on it, and most definitely not without a PPI.

I seriously would be afraid to lift the engine lid with it running like that.

My 3.2 may be louder at idle than water cooled cars, but it is definitely smooth.

Keep in Mind this is not a 3.2, it does not have electronic fuel injection, an ISV ,head temp sensors to smooth out idle etc, its a largely mechanical system.
