Default Good deal on this 84 Fact. Widebody?

Here's the description:

This Factory Turbo look Coupe is awesome. It is a rare car with factory sunroof delete option. As with all Factory Turbolook coupes, this car has the full steel turbo bodywork, Turbo suspension and large four piston Brembo brakes. In the past eighteen months this car has recieved an OG Racing roll cage, race seats with TRW Sablet harneses, Smart Racing Products tubular sway bars, tubular torsion bars, heim joint bumpsteer kit, solid suspension bushings, Weltmeister spring plates, Fikse 9&11x17 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sports, lowered, corner weighed and competition aligned. This car is equipped with a stock 3.2 liter engine with motronic fuel injection, and a B&B muffler. It has been sorted out with only 2 track days and 2 autocrosses. Ready for street, track, or Club Racing.

The guy selling it seems like a great guy. He's asking $25k firm. Car is verified factory widebody with 100k miles. I will have a PPI done at a Porsche dealer. Suggestion, comments, recommendations???

I'm not sure what those mods are worth, but $25k sounds pretty expensive for an '84 with 100k. You could buy a concours condtion '84 for that, or a really nice '87-'89 with the improved G50 transmission.

I do not think the fact that it is a wide body adds all that much value in this case.

Just my $0.02

The gentleman selling the car indicated that those modifications were put in last year at a cost of $8k

25k is too much. He can't expect to get his 8k mods back. Material / part cost at most, but not labor. For 25-30k you can get a turbo wide body that actually *is* a turbo. Just my two cents.

Excellence listed an 84 TL at about 25,000 for an excellent example, and 19,000 for a good one. I've also heard that a factory wide body brings about $5000 more than a regular one.

If it's what you want, get it. You only live once.

I doubt a car with 100k miles still counts as an 'excellent' example. No way you put that mileage on there without rubbing the seat a bit, getting some stone chips in the paint and other minor signs of wear. I'd say 20k for the car but in the end Chris is right, if you like it BUY it.

I know I paid too much for my TL, but it was a gut decision. I've always loved the wide body. What's a few thousand if your happy? Besides, fixing up my ride will keep me occupied and out of trouble, at least for awhile!

I do like it and plan on having a PPI done. The thing is, the mods that he has put into it to set it up for DE events are something that I would have to add myself if I bought a stock example for less. Therefore, the mods do hold their value for me.

The example you're considering sounds like a nice one but when it comes to a 'Factory Turbo-Look' 911, be cautious of any and all changes or modifications made since the car was new. First, make sure it’s a ‘real’ one and then carefully investigate its 'history' and maintenance records. The lack of either is a serious flag and should not be passed over lightly... When you have a PPI done, use all the discrepancies as an effective negotiating tool (aka 'big stick' to beat up the seller... heh, heh).

When I purchased my '84 Factory TL six years ago, it had over 110,000 miles. It appeared to be a nice example but had a limited history and 'sketchy' maintenance records. After reviewing the PPI findings performed at the Porsche Dealership, I felt confident enough to buy it only after convincing the seller to reduce our initially negotiated price by an additional $3,000 to cover the discrepancies found. Because of questionable maintenance, I felt it prudent to proceed with a 60k Service, 10,000 miles early. After the repairs were made, I drove away with a great car and have been happy ever since. It now has well over 176,000 fun-filled miles on the odometer. I just got back from an extended 2,300 mile road trip up the west coast last week. I like it more than ever. Over the years, I have owned three 911s and this M-491 coupe is by far my favorite.

Normally aspirated Factory 'Turbo-Looks' are a rare breed and cost their original owners and additional $10-$14K above the price of a new Carrera (depending on year purchased). This same M-491 option was used as the platform for all production 930 Turbos until 1989. Lateral grip and braking far exceed their unmodified narrow-bodied brethren. Over the years, many have been converted to dedicated track cars and unfortunately, quite a few have been destroyed. In the future, expect to see these unique Porsches go up in value at a greater pace than 'normal' 911/930s. For more information and pictures of these limited production cars and their ancestors, check out this site:

911 Factory Turbo-Look Gruppe

Good luck on your search and post some pictures when you find the one for you!

Cheers!

Anybody following this one? Also an '84, but with a 3.6 and a bunch of mods. Looks nice in the photos except for the well-worn seats. Relisted as it didn't meet the reserve.
