Going to replace all 4 tires on my 78 911. 16" Fuchs and going with 205/55/16 front 225/50/16 rear. Discount Tire recommended the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3, the BFGoodrich G-force Sport Comp-2, or Bridgestone Potenza RE11/RE71R. No wet or winter driving in this car.

-$600 max budget
-Summer Southern California driving only
-No wet/rain driving

Doesn't have to be a long mile tire…more focused on something that works well for the conditions above and $600 max budget. Car is not a daily driver.

Recommendations?

How fresh is the suspension?

 

pretty aged. Suspension will be next. Tires are old and those are the priority right now to make the car safe and drivable!

 

My Bridgestone RE-11 are working great around here and have a lot of grip.

 

What I have on the 996 Turbo (came with the car), and I'd guess they're fine in 16" sizes too. But really for a stock, 35 year old car pretty much anything will be fine.

You won't believe how the car will transform with new bushings and fresh, properly valved dampers.

 

I just replaced my 160,000 mile suspension and the improvement is wonderful. It is like a whole new car.

 

This is what I'm running. Been to Salt Lake, Phoenix, San Diego, and I love them. Best tires I've ever owned.

Local retailers will not sell them to you so you have to go to Tire Rack. (retailers think that you are going to drift on them)

Any thoughts about the BFGoodrich f-Force Sport Comp2 vs the Bridgestone RE 11? Really looking for the "summer" tire for spirited driving in dry conditions. Sticky tire with low noise sounds good! The RE 11's have a nice aggressive "look" to them.

 

I like the reviews and feedback on the Bridgestone lineup. Was also directed toward the RE-71R.

Anyone have experience or a preference between the RE-11 and the Re-71R? I think the RE-71R is the model that is supposed to replace the RE-11A.

I figure to go with the "newest" model tire.

Got a quote for the same price out the door for either model.

 

You are fortunate to have a 915 tranny. Replacing the front torsion bars is cheap and easy. In the rear you have options that the G50 cars just don't have. Well, we have them, but the price point and wait time is astronomical. You will get lots of help when you are ready.

 

I went with Continental Extreme Contact DW (summer tire) in the same sizes for my '88, also ordered through Discount Tire. Cost was $540 installed if i remember right.

While i likely will never drive the car in the rain its nice knowing i can do long trips and not have to worry about it.

Ordered the RE-71R's. Mounting them up saturday, so I will report back.

As for suspension, took some measurements today and rear sits at 24.25" from ground to fender, front sits at 26". Always thought the front sat a little high. Once the tires are mounted, I will lower down the front. Thinking I should aim for about 25" and see how that sits.
