Default 1976- 911 -Only 4 gears

I very recently picked up a 1976 911. Most things seem pretty good. It is about a 10 foot or 10 mile per hour car. It has the airbox valve, eleven blade fan, replaced engine studs, etc. However, I am absolutely unable to find fifth gear in the transmission. There is a little balkiness going into third otherwise it shifts smooth. However, no fifth???

Any ideas?

Hi:

I would certainly think about replacing the shift coupler, the plastic cup at the base of the shifter, and the bushing that locates the shift shaft.

Then,...I would follow the Factory instructions and set up the shifter throw (in both planes) at the new coupler.

I second that, my first drive after purchasing my car would "knick" reverse everytime i went from 5th to fourth. Sometimes fourth was impossible to find. Replaced the ball cup, shift rod bushing, and went to a factory short shift kit (wasn't really nessecary but i wanted one) and it was like night and day.

Are you sure the transmission ever had a 5th gear? Believe it or not 5 speeds were options even on top of the line Carreras in '76
In '76
915/44 was the 5 speed version
915/49 was the 4 speed version

The shift **** has a 5-speed pattern. The manual that was in the glove box appears to be for a 5-speed, but is very generic being for 911 and 912's. But it is not a matter of fifth gear being difficult to find but impossible. I have never, ever, ever, been able to find fifth. Is there a simple way to definitively check? On the mechanical ability scale of 1-10, I am about a 2.5.

Thanks.
