Is this the front or rear lid?
My rear engine lid was stuck closed once. I was freaked out.
Looking under the lid gap from the side, I was just able to get a thin jimmy bar onto the male prong and push it enough to pop the lid. (Whew!)
It turned out the cable pull needed to be adjusted since it was not moving the little notch enough.
