Default Your thoughts on a backdated 964 speedster conversion

Hello, I am in the process of doing a 964 speedster conversion and thought of maybe backdating it. Was curious to know how other enthusiast think. I am new to the air cooled 911 scene. Always been a fan of the 964 speedster since I had the chance to pick one up in 1997 but decided to buy a beamer convertible. Except the beamer is worth 5k and the speedster is worth 150k plus now.

I am curious to know what your thoughts are on this PS retro speedster. To me it a speedster isn't about chrome and elegance, its supposed to be more round and a bit beefier (not too much).

I guess what I am asking is if there was a 70's 911 speedster is this how you would imagine it.

Cheers
H

Interesting thinking outside of the box.

I have wondered what it would be like to take my 964 Speedster to Singer as a donor but alas i would be better off start with a 964 cabrio conversion inordr to save my real Speedster.

A 69-73 longhood speedster concept would be interesting however i wonder if the modern fiberglass clamshell would clash with the classic steel bumpers?

One thing is for certain, the 1989 speedster looks great with widebody and fuchs.
With a longhood conversion and removal of the impact bumpers i wonder how it would look?

We had a guy out here do a speedster thing on a '66 or '67 back in the early '70s. Was in Excellence or Panorama years (decades?) back. Saw it in person probably 30 years ago. Should be able to search and find details.

I am waiting for Rob to do a speedster, now that would be the one. I think even if you tell Rob to take your speedster as a donor he would tell you to start with a normal 964 cab. Singer is out of my budget but there's an idea. If you do this I get to see you driving around Vancouver

I thought about doing ST/Singer but it would be hard to get the right stance and have everything come together proper.

With the PS style (narrow) its much easier and would look more "longhood speedster concept". Not messing with too many body lines.

I think going with just a bit bigger wheels, minimal chrome, shorter seats and reworked clamshell would be the way to go.

I think you hit the nail in the head with the clamshell. The combination of the seats and clamshell makes the car modern and taller.

I am hoping to get the look original with a bit of an edge to make it cleaner.

Hi I am pretty sure I know the car. The same gentleman is actually building a unique longhood speedster on 73 tub now.

Not feeling the look with the top up... But the interior looks beautiful and the car looks great with the top down.

Is it the color you don't like or you think its the flow with the car that's not working?

do you like the 964 speedster with the top up?

You got me thinking.

Since there are always a heap of Manual Cab's in 964 for sale.

What about turning them into a 964 Speedster? Would this be easy to do??

yes, it is fairly easy.
trouble is finding the parts. Clam shell, roof and windsheild frame. $20k typically.

Eych - I think it's only my opinion and after looking at other 964 Speedsters (link) I realize that in general I like the 964 Speedster look without the top up. How the fabric wraps around seems too big for me breaking the beautiful graceful lines possible with the top off. Again this is only my opinion - In terms of build quality it looks beautiful otherwise...

Thats how I got started to do nb or wide body but now I am exploring the option of backdating

here is a quick part list
"parts:
speedster windscreen
windscreen frame
sun visors.
doors ( if nowhere to be found, you can adjust regular ones to Speedster specification I believe)
RS doorcards (easily self made)
speedster side windows
convertible top for speedster
speedster fiber glass part to put roof under (these are made aftermarket)
seat delete (custom made?)
2 recaro's
(cup mirrors if not already on car)
paint
tons of little things

I estimate you should budget about 40K plus $

if you want a turbo body

wheel arches steel
turbo fenders (or maybe butt weld aftermarket)
narrow body suspension to turbo suspension (due to wider body need the other mounting points right)
964 turbo bumper/skirts kit (aftermarket?)"

PS: Love your car collection and with a car collection like yours, you don't need this headache

Thank you.

I agree that I don't need any more heaches than I currently have, hkwver a fun project might by up my ally.....

Just a though at this stage.
