What year is the car? Not all factory shifters are frame aged equal

My car in an 1986.

Just came in from a drive, did I mention I love my car? Anyway, I found that 2500 3500 and anywhere in that rpm range, it's not so bad. Would like to try a wevo or renn shifter some time.

1986 has the best shifter that was ever fitted to the 915. I wouldn't change it personally. If you think that throw is long you will always think the throw is long. And you already can shift faster than the synchros can synchronize.

Now for $195 a Seine gate shift modification is an improvement in feel I would suggest.

Thanks for all your input, for everyone's input, very appreciated.

I think that the shift kit you suggest is the plan, also a solid coupler later on and good times ahead.

Thanks Again to all....

What is the point of getting a shift kit?

If it is quicker shifts you are looking for you will need a rebuild that much quicker.

Learn to be one with your gearbox and you will soon find it is an amazing piece of work.

911rod, I have come to terms with the shifter, the shift kit helps to avoid miss shifting.

No, proper driving technique avoids missing a shift.

Exactly what I meant when I said become one with your gearbox.

Having it be totally relaxed between shifts is the ticket.

I still remember years ago when I was at Mosport and shifting pretty hard up the backstreatch. My instructor told me each time I do that it will cost me $2.00.

So got rid of the instructor. lol (He was right)

Yeah the factory shift in my 85 is long but it gives the tranny time to gather it's thoughts and organize what it should do..... A couple of things, on mine even when driving hard, I pause for a very brief "micro second" while in neutral between shifts, RPM match, and when pulling it out of fifth let the spring find the 3-4th gate. Having a war of wills with most trannys is a mistake, and even more so with a 915. I really enjoy the 915, I own a G-50 (993) and.....dare I say it?, it feels much more "ordinary" as far as a tranny goes. Not as "ordinary" as my buddy's 996 though, which feels as smooth and easy as I can imagine. Cheers

I'm pretty sure the length of travel on the '85 shifter is half way between '84 (and earlier) and '86 (and later). Just right if you ask me.

May be a silly question, but in anticipation of picking up my '86 - when folks suggest a "pause in neutral" is the recommendation to:

- just pause when shifting on the 1-2 plane?
- with clutch depressed, actually center the shifter towards neutral, then back down/left to 2nd?
- or do a full double clutch into and out of neutral?

Thanks!

Matt

I only pause on 1-2 and keep it in the 1-2 plane. Rev it high enough in 1st and will pull in cleanly.

I installed Porsche short shifter and bushing in this link. It improved shifts and make a world of difference on feel. It's like half the throw length, a lot of fun to drive.
