Default What's the trick to get an aftermarket tach to work?

It's a 78 three liter race car. I bought an autometer "spec" 5 inch tach.

Hooked it all up. Good measurements at idle. Went bonkers when you revved it. It was wired into the factory tach signal.

Autometer says it's gauges are not that friendly with Porsche or volkswagen.

So we decided to swap the ignition for a msd digital and wire that directly to the tach.

Odd, but still doesn't work. Suggestions?

Here's a link to the tach:

I do not think that a lot of people have deviated from the stock units... that is why there are no responses...

I could be facing something similar... I am building a gauge cluster to run the engine on the stand (912 engine) and using generic gauges... tachometer is from a '81 FIAT... we will see how that goes...

(don't mind the fuel gauge, that was just to make sure that the hole was correctly sized... that is now replaced by a voltmeter...)

Well, we got it figured out this morning. Autometer had suggested an adapter initially, which didn't work. That's when I suggested swapping over the MSD and doing a direct wire. Which they did, but forgot to remove the autometer adapter. Once that adapter wasn't between the tach and the ignition, it worked fine.

That's being said, I found a product I could have used instead of the MSD and saved a few bucks. Oh well, the ignition is already in and it's all working. I'd be crazy to pay to have it uninstalled at this point
