915 g'box selection problems
My '72 E has the type 915 gearbox, but apparently retains the older gear shifter from the '71 and earlier models.
I have problems selecting 1st when stopped after a short period of city driving. Seems to select 1st OK when oil in box is cold, but becomes difficult after 15 mind driving. If I am in neutral at a stop light then go to grab 1st, I usually need to select 3rd/4th, then slip back to 1st.
It almost feels like the clutch is not disengaging completely but this car had a recent new OEM Porsche clutch kit installed.
All gear linkage bushes were also renewed recently. It has been suggested I install a shifter from a later model ('73 onwards)which has a more positive lockout mechanism (for reverse). Anyone had this experience ?
It has also been suggested there is oil leaking from the g'box shaft onto the clutch but I cant feel any slippage of smell burning oil? Would this inhibit 1st gear selection from a standstill ?

This sounds more like a problem with the throw-out bearing. If your TO bearing is old or bad,it makes shifting difficult, giving the shifter a very stiff feeling and making it difficult to engage. I had tis same problem on a TR, and it got worse after the car was warm, same as you are experienceing.
Check that out next.

better ask a few more questions, where is you first gear on the shift pattern? I don't believe you can shift a 915 with a 901 shifter, and unless someone had done some serious pounding on your body pannel between the two rear seats to fit the 915 in there, you still have a 901.
I put a 915 into my 1970 and I had to cut out the hump between the seats and weldin a later years one to get the trani to fit. so check these things out to get a solid basis for going forward.
