Default Transmission 'chatter' - time for a rebuild?

Hi all,

I'm noticing what I would call transmission or gearbox 'chatter' in lower revs when driving my '87. Once the revs come up and the engine and trans are under load the 'chatter' immediately goes away.

I'm thinking it's time for my g-50 to be refurbished. 117K on the clock. What do you guys think and what am I potentially looking at here?

thanks!

Jim

Not a G50 guy as I have a 915 but chatter can mean a lot of dif things....could be something as simple as a worn out thrust/release bearing as they will chatter when worn and you can feel it thru the shifter. You'll notice this when at low speeds almost coasting under power.

G50's make some racket in lower gears. Unless it whines or grinds on shifts don't sweat it.

also do you have LSD ? this could contribute to this also .. you would notice it more pulling away on turns at very light load .

There is a service bulitin on this, I think. The fix is a heavy rubber band around the shifter linkage that obsorbs vibration.

FWIW...since I stripped all..all of the sound deadening material from my SC I hear things you wouldn't believe.
Without that barrier you'd be surprised at the whines, taps, etc. and I actually enjoy all of that.
For awhile I thought someone beyond the grave was attempting to contact me.
