i've come across a couple of local (to me) cars that look somewhat interesting. Here’s the first one. This vehicle was sold earlier this year for about $20/21k, so the car has ‘dealer flip’ written all over it. Nonetheless I'd love to hear what you experts think, based on info available and pictures, if it may be worth going to take a look in person.
1) based on the pictures, the interior looks rather tired and worn to me. Or is it the normal level of wear for a car that old?
2) this picture shows what looks like a messy bundle of electrical wiring hanging from underneath the dashboard. I'm assuming that those wires aren't supposed to be there normally?
3) based on some info visible on the old ebay $21k listing, it looks like there was a 3y gap between the last two car registrations, so it could be that the car might have sat idle for at least a year, which clearly wouldn’t be good.
As far as the interior goes,i would think it's pretty good considering that the dash doesn't appear to be cracked and the seat bolsters exibit normal wear and they aren't torn,it is a 30 year old car after all ...
Not sure if i would spend 27K for an 83 though ... somebody is making a good markup after a thorough detailing job !
Do get a solid PPI from an independant Porsche shop if you want the real truth about the car !
I spent the past 6 months looking at SC's and just bought this 78 SC Targa 155K miles and paid $15K. Similar overall condition. I'd say the car you're looking at is $5K overpriced. Keep looking, there are better deals out there.
On the positive side, I will say that an SC is a great car and tons of fun to drive.

NICE!!!!
Yes the seller is a dealer (flipper) who bought the car for about $21,000 back in October. I contacted them about the recent "work" that was done on it to see if they did a little more than wash and wax the car and mark it up $6,900. He did not answer my question.

Thanks! What about that bundle of wires and the condenser, does that look ok to you?
I resisted the urge to bid on this 1986 911 http://m.ebay.com/itm/321623790738?nav=SEARCH
Other than the salvage title due to theft what made me walk away is the seller said the car had a 901 transmission... Shouldn't it be a 915?
Also a 964 electric tail but I could live with that. I kinda want to know what happened to this car with mixed updating and backdating (the transmission)...
My prejudices are showing, so apologies up front, but I wouldn't buy a used toaster from somebody on Craigslist...
Unfortunately, the rapid value rise on these SC/Carraras is bringing all the scumbags out of the woodwork.
Fortunately, there are still lots of these cars in the hands of legitimate, enthusiast owners who know where to advertise (Excellence, Pelican, Pano, etc). Also word of mouth in the local PCA club can yield nice cars for sale.
There are no "bargains" anymore. Feral Porsches can be money-pit nightmares. You can quickly drop $5K into a sh*tbox, and still have a sh*tbox
If you want one of these cars, spend the time and premium dollar to buy a well documented car from a long-term private owner. You won't be sorry.
Could not agree more with JCP911S. In my limited experience I have purchased great porsches from no-BS enthusiast owners with maintenance records, no surprise carfax, and clean title work. In nearly every case there was a specific independent mechanic that had taken care of the car and could talk about the car's history and owner. PPIs confirmed history/maintenance/value and are necessary and worth every penny- they have also found minor items that did not dissuade but have allowed negotiation. The extra time and money to find these cars comes back if the day ever comes to sell. The money pit sh*tbox will be no fun to own or sell. Tom
If this helps any ... there are some nice cars in the Panorama classifieds, you can bet that most of them had been treated well during their ownership,it's worth taking a look !
Of course there's a few dreamers who think their car is made of solid gold, but nevertheless i noticed a few decent deals.
Looks like the 83 Coupe has a new owner. I had a feeling it would not last long. Went to a Pelicanite in OR. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/844834-new-porsche.html
