Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice. A friend of mine just called me about a 1976 911 he just bought. It's not 100% original, and I don't have any info on it save the fact that it's a 911. That said, he wants to build a quick street car, but it will probably never see a track. Any suggestions on performance mods that won't break the bank? Any good kits out there to increase displacement without machine work? Ignition, carb/FI recommendations, exhaust? ANY help is appreciated. I'm turning him on to Rennlist as soon as I get back from CA. Thanks!

You're probably going to have to break the bank. Sorry, I don't know of any ways to get significant power increase out of our cars without changing compression ratio and changing induction to MFI or Webers.
You can add a set of 74 heat exchangers which will free things up a little.

JP:
Left is right on, Sir.
There is no way to do anything worthwhile, cheaply with these cars. Have your friend do his research on these mag-cased 2.7's and if he spends the dough, he can have a VERY strong running 2.7 RS clone motor.
Those cars need many many things to be reliable and durable, but they can turn out very successfully.
Other good alternatives include swapping a 3.2 or 3.6 engine into the car along with a high-end oil cooling system.
Don't forget that suspension upgrades should be done first.

Lighter, make the car lighter by removing all the things you don't need.
Spare wheel, replace front and rear valance (those are heavy) with polyurethane types fx.RUF CTR replicas, replace seats with fx. Sparcos, remove backseats, innerdoor side with RS replicas and so on and you will easily save 150 kg. All this will result in a stiffer car with better brakes (without replacing them) and of course a much better performance due to the better weight ratio.
Add a set of new shocks, turbo tie rods, a new sway bar and a four wheel alignment. You will now have a car that is fun light and fast and it will not cost all the money in the world.

As the others have said, "no such thing as cheap" when you're dealing with 911s. If your buddy just wants a 911 "street rod", he may want to consider a Chevy V8 conversion. You could do this for around $5K and would have 300+ hp animal (some would say, "bastard"). A "bone stock" rebuild on the '76 2.7 would also be around $5K.
Just food for thought.

JP944,
I have a 1975 911 Carrera 2.7L. The motor is at the shop having a complete rebuild at the tune of $10,000. This doesn't include the trans or new paint also in progress. These are expensive motors. I would recommend backdating your exhaust to a 1974 and installing SSI's exchangers. This added extra HP and the car performed alot better. Also brought the operating temps down a bunch.
