Default Removing plastic grip from hand brake handle

Can anyone tell me how to remove the plastic grip from the hand brake lever, without destroying it?
It looks too thin and fragile for the bludgeoning approach called for in the
manual for the heater and shift *****.
Thanks
Joe

I had to break mine to get it off.

I replaced it with a leather handle/boot combo from AGLA. A very nice upgrade.
