Wink New to Air cooled!

I am a current Porsche owner who is looking to purchase a 76' Carrera that I found.

The car is not running right now, he said the fuel pump went out but that it will fire right up on starting fluid.

I don't know anything about these cars other than I love the way they look.

Any help would be appreciated.

If your not sure what you are looking at make sure and have a ppi done on the car.

This is a super cheap car, more so a "project".

I'm looking for ERA specific problems (example: 996 is known for IMS/RMS issues) that would be obvious to shy away from.

Question

So what would you guys say a 76' in decent condition would be worth, no wrecks, no damage, all intact?

Needs, tune up, tires, brakes, paint, moldings, etc....

Interior is 8 out of 10.

Body is straight just needs paint.

$10-12k?

I'm just throwing a number out to get things started... we can let the group chime in from there!

I'd want to see it start up before buying it. A "tune up" can quickly turn into a $10k repair bill if the seller isn't completely honest about it. If it just needs a fuel pump, why didn't he replace it before selling so that he could show it runs?

I certainly don't buy the " tune up" either

I have never heard if a 76 Carrera unless it's a euro Carrera but I doubt it

74-77 are the least desirable due to all kinds of issues. If it is repaired and well sorted it's fine. But if not you are on the front end of the money pit.

Pulled head studs requiring complete rebuild line bore and machining could be in order. That could be a 15k tune up right there

Under body rust has to be checked for very carefull also

You will need a thorough ppi for any air cooled especially the 74-77.

Not the best way to jump into a project car in my opinion. Pick up a copy of The Used 911 Story which does a great job at explaining the era specific problems you're looking for.

That is good advice .. as i said once sorted these are as solid as any other air cooled Porsche .. the issue is getting them to that point if they have been neglected.

if the head studs are pulled it will run rough and have strange sounds ... dont get sold on the " it just needs a tune up"

A "real" 76 Carrera would be quite a rare beast - can you post the VIN to verify what it is?

Porsche made 2 Carrera's in '76:

1. Carrera 3.0 (3.0 litre CIS engine w/200 BHP).

2. Carrera 2.7 (2.7 MFI engine w/210 BHP) and very rare.

Which one is it?

Pretty sure there is a US Carrera for 1976 with CIS 2.7 160 BHP ( this could be it and it's
not known for it's performance or resale figures)

Nossir,.....US Carrera's were made in '74 & '75, only. In '76, the Turbo Carrera replaced them.

Steve yes they were produced in '74-'75 but mostly sold the next calendar year ...

Ice the only distinguishing facets would be spoilers and graphics oh and Carrera flares and 7" rear fuchs
