Default Door locking mechanism stuck past locking position

My '87 911 door handle was not actuating yesterday and in fiddling with it I accidentally rotated the door latching mechanism on the end of the door (the oval part on the end of the door that fits into the striker plate on the door jamb) too far, seemigly past the locking position. No amount of fiddling (or banging) inside or outside the door will rotate it back. Has anyone got any experience fixing this issue? I am wondering if my only option now is to remove the part from the car and try to fix it outside the car, or replace it. Doing so seems to require removal of the window track, and I am nervous about getting everything back together right. Thanks!

Of course this is on my coupe and not my targa, although I don't understand why it would behave any differently.
