Default Cheap *** Porrsche tranny

So, I only get 245k miles out of my 31 year old 915 and then the synchro on 2nd gear goes.
The other gears still shift smooth as silk.
Is that still under warranty?
Should I just use 4 gears?
Decisions, decisions.....

I heard a rumble about a class action on this issue. They just don't make them like they used ....

I heard up to 80% of all 911's have this issue. I wish Porsche would admit to this design flaw and cover it.

Hope you have a CPO warranty.

I would just find a road that favors second gear. That is where I have the most fun.

Lol...can't get into second at all...I suspect the synchro ring has slipped and is jammed. I've been double clutching for awhile now but 2nd gave up the ghost.
Ya'll might remember but I've pulled some teeth off of the tranny mag a few times...I suspect the PO had difficulty cleanly downshifting or did a 3 to 2 when he meant 3 to 4 and jammed it at one point.
Anyways have a newly rebuilt 3.0 might as well have a newly rebuilt 915 to go with.

I recall that Peter Z has a fresh 915 on the shelf in his garage

Personally, I'd send yours to Steve Weiner packed in an Igloo.

2nd is highly over rated you have enough torque in that new motor to go from 1st to 3rd. so you're good for another half mil..

I was told of a local guy that did that for 6 mos. or so with no issues.
I'd be afraid of bits getting where they shouldn't be and doing more damage.
I'm not going to rebuild it, Jack at Stuttgart SW in Phx will do that.
Great experienced shop and very fair guy.
I trailered it down there yesterday.

Yeah, both guys I know well, Jack at the shop and Howard Freeman told me about folks that had driven that way for months prior to getting it fixed.
I wouldn't risk it but it has been done.
I guess if that synchro is jammed in place (expanded) it just keeps you from getting that gear...(my guess). It is as if there was a gate block there...you get into neutral between 1/2 but no further south.
The other gears are smooth as silk....could be deceiving.

Plan on a final bill total (based on this trans having never been opened, which is about a 2% chance) of about $6+K. Your rear pinion shaft bearing race will be loose in the diff housing, your carrier bearings and many bearings in the trans will require replacement. Your 1st, 2nd, and maybe 3rd gear sets will have enough root wear-through to require replacement, and your 5th speed will have enough wear on its ID bearing surface to also need replacement. Your ring/pinion has about a 50-75% chance of being OK, if it has to be replaced add another $$$ to the above.
