Default 1977 911s- should i buy

Hey all,

My name is Michael I'm 29. My dad had a 914 imported from Germany with a Chalon kit when i was a kid so i have been a porsche kid since day 1~! I'd like to buy him a new one.

Moving along a 1977 911s in all its barn find glory has popped up near me. The seller is asking 5k. I don't plan on paying that much.

So far from what i know it had an engine that was starved of oil at some point it was pulled. It was then given a 2nd engine from LA that had knock immediately. So it comes with two non running engines. Other wise the overall state of the car is ROUGH.

Thoughts on a budget ? I'm pretty handy and have built lots of Toyota's but never thought id be able to afford a porsche.

Imaginary Budget
Paint - 2500
Window seals - $1000 ( pitting and rust)

Engine - 2500-3000 hoping to get a 3.0L
General mucking about- $1500

Pics attached !

Any and all suggestions welcomed!

Two crappy engines. That could be a double batch of useless parts. If you had a good set of pistons and cylinders, case, heads, crank and cams-you could easily spend $8k in parts and machining to build a stock engine.

If you did paint the car yourself, you could get by with $2500. But that much rust showing on a '77 is the tip of the iceberg-there are MANY hours of rust repair.

The fiddly item budget could easily be doubled to $3k or 4k. If you went through the brakes alone, on a proper level for a 911, you could drop $1k or more.

The big issue is the motor in my belief. If you had a sound motor, you have body repair skills to go with mechanical skills and you basically got the car for next to free, this project still could add up $ and time in a significant way. Throw the motor issue in, and I'd pass.

A "good" used SC motor has to cost in the $6-7k range these days, and you still have an unknown used motor.

Paint and body 8k unless you are doing all the work.

The $5K asking price is certainly tempting, but the work involved to get the car just to the level of 'rolling restoration' could very easily add an additional $10K not too mention the headaches involved with body work and inventorying 2 bad engines.

My best advice is to keep looking for one that's closer to being a runner. It doesn't have to be perfect, or even nice, but you'll be way better off in the long run with a $10K car that needs $5K worth of work.

Money pit. Run away.

A really nice 2.7 can be had for $12-15K, and a nice SC driver for under $20, if you are willing to live with some cosmetic issues.

He said he's already paid for it.

How's the suspension and brakes tires etc? The budget sounds low to me on parts.
