Default New 86 911 owner need recommendations

Hi everyone,
I have been lurking as a guest for sometime and decided now is the time to sign up seeing as I just bought my first Porsche last week. I live in KC and am having the car delivered here and I can't wait! However, according to the PPI it is arriving with bad synchros and I am sure I'll need to get this resolved before I can really enjoy the car. Can any of you recommend a good shop to take this air-cooled beauty to?

Thanks!

Default 1986 "Joy"

Welcome and I am of no help as well. But I hear that the synchs is a common issue and should be easily fixed (mine was before I purchased my '86). Have you joined PCA (Porsche Club of America) yet? I found my mechanic through the local PCA club. I bet they have a local facebook & web page where you can ask the question to it's followers. If of course, you do not get an answer here. Post pics asap and get ready to have the time of your life driving your air-cooled Porsche.

Here is a pic from this morning's drive!

I would try Stalltek in Wellman, IA. Talk to Lee and tell him I sent you.

Most of the labor cost will be in engine removal etc, so make sure you have the shop put in a new clutch and associated parts while they have the tranny out

Synchros ( especially 2nd gear) are a common issue

Get in touch with Bob Wayman, Pres. of your local PCA (KCPCA).

He has a guy (John I believe) and can set you up with him. If that doesn't work, do exactly what Steve W. tells you to do and nothing else. You'll learn why soon enough.

Cheers, give Bob hell for me.

There are synchro problems and then there are SYNCHRO problems.

A slight grind on upshifts, especially 1-2 and 2-3 is common, and you can drive around it with a slight pause in neutral.

If the shift cannot be completed, or grinds loudly, even with careful shifting, then you need to cough it up, and do the trans. Generally this will cost about $3k, plus "while the engine is out", a new clutch, etc, etc.

But the good news is that once this is done, you're good for another 80K miles, so you can drive the car virtually for the rest of your life without further trans problems.

Hi Everyone,
My 911 finally arrived, all the way from Michigan. I've uploaded an early image of it. I've had a blast driving it over the last few days and like all new Porsche owners I have started my list of items that don't work (yet).
