Default 911 Loose Steering Wheel

I have a 1987 911. While driving to work today I noticed the steering wheel was very "loose". I could move it up and down approximately 1/8". When going over bumps it rattled. What's up? Safe to drive?

Not sure, but it sounds like a cracked steering column support bushing. Very common failure on these cars. Mine had it. There is an easy fix with an upgraded part. Check around for the Mitch Leland replacement bushing. Around $30. If that is what is wrong, the car should be safe to drive.

tulliotk is probably right. That old support bushing was made of plastic and I'm surprised it lasted this long. I found a similar one on Pelican Parts with a P/N 928 041 102 01, but it says it's for a
928, but may work on yours.

One of the easiest fixes you will encounter. Enjoy it.

my '86 got that way overnight.

Plastic ( acetal probably) just fell apart with age.

Got a metal replacement part from Pelican that tightened it right back up. Easy install, toughest part was breaking the steering wheel nut loose.

Used some PVC conduit to tap in the new part

There is a simple fix I did years ago on my '89. The failed part is a plastic bushing. The fix is a two piece metal shim. Super easy fix and I think I got the part from Pelican for less than $20.

I think the busing dries out over time and falls to pieces.

Yep, find the Mitch Leland bushing kit at Pelican Parts. I did the fix a few years ago. A very easy project. Here is the link.

That's the correct part. It was the easiest solution when I did mine over 15 years ago. There was no Mitch Leland alternative then.
