My friend has an '83 911SC and called me last night asking if I would check my 911 shop manuals for the procedure to change just the electrical part of the ignition switch. I did some searching of the literature, but found nothing other than the procedure for removing the whole steering lock mechanism including the switch. That seems like a bit of overkill to me for what has to be done, but I don't have the car at my disposal to look under the dash to see if there is possibly a less drastic approach. Since I can't seem to find the switch replacement procedure (electrical part only) and since I can't just take a quick look under the dash to see if it's intuitively easy, I wonder if anyone of you has ever done this job and can assist me.
The electrical part of the switch is available from Pelican, and from the looks of their picture, just two screws appear to hold it to the rest of the assembly. Can these two screws be readily accessed from under the dash?
what I did.. disconnect battery and remove wheel.. remove Whole switch. it's a tight fit to remove the screws.. after I did mine I read that the screws can be accessed thru the bulkhead with a long screwdriver.........Ron
Thanks Ron. I just talked to my friend by phone, and he tells me he did the job this afternoon without major disassembly. He said because of the tight fit, he used a short cordless drill screwdriver bit and turned it with an open end wrench. To replace things, he said, he "crazy glued" the bit to the top screw--the most difficult to reach--which allowed him to start it easier. He left the bit glued to the screw to facilitate removal, he says, if he ever has to do the job again. German engineering, but Yankee ingenuity!!
