Default Outer Spring Plate Cover looks exploded?

Outer Spring Plate Cover looks like it exploded. Not sure if is just an undercoating that has pulled away. I am going to do further inspection this week. What is the purpose of the cover and if it is distorted does that mean the spring plate is destroyed underneath also.

Thanks for the help.

The section that holds on to the torsion bar splines is about 2" in diameter and 'sticks' out of the spring plate towards the outside, clearly visible. Are you talking about this section?

If yes, this section on a stock spring plate has some rubber layer over it, possibly from priming the spring plate to put on the rubber spring plate bushings by the factory. This thick coating, about 1/8 inch thick may peel and give you the impression that there is a problem. This may be coming from you or a previous owner using the locatoin as a supporting point to put their jack stand. It is as a matter of fact a good supporting point if you don't work on the suspension.

If that layer is peeling, no problem, you don't need it.

Does this help? If not, send some pictures and we may be able to see better what you mean!

Default rubber coating

Yes, it may be a coating of some sort. I will try and examine it further. I used a mirror, but could only see inside the pealed back portion a little. I am going back again.

Thanks
