Default Headlight leveling system

Hello,
I have gotten a pair of H4 headlights with the OEM headlight leveling system attached, I have found the system in the PET parts guide, but can find little about it and how it works. Is this a rare item and does anyone know how it works?

It appears that you manually adjust the aim with the dash-mounted switch.

Any information would be appreciated.

regards,
Todd Last

That's kind of cool. I have never seen that before. Vacuum based controller. Got to love German engineers. I wonder if the lights move if you get a vacuum leak.

I don't have anything like that on my 88 Carrera and have never seen it before. It may be on 89 C4's and up. H4's require a manual adjustment. A shop manual will explain how to do it or maybe there are threads on Pelicam.com.

We were in Germany in 1995, and I was surprised that the Audi A4 we rented had manually adjustable headlights to compensate for change in angle due to the weight distribution of passengers and cargo in the car. I don't think anything like that is allowed in the US.

I'm guessing that's what this H4 system is for.

my 1995 Audi 90 had it ..

leveling grdient with a buble next to the llight and a white **** to turn so you could adjust.
My 2000 A6 has sensors on the front and rear drivers control arm that activate motors on the headlight. It is pretty damn cool i must say ... well... till it breaks .

The Headlight leveling system was standard installation in Germany and Austria on the 964 according to my old documents. Even Headlight cleaning system was standard over here in Europe.
Only issue of the system is that you have another potential source for intake air leaks...

The headlight leveling system was optional starting in 87 for the Euro market, and it was standard equipment on all cars shipped to Italy and the UK. It was never fitted to any US cars because it only works with H4s and US cars did not receive H4's, they got standard DOT sealed beam headlights.

Those of you with U.S. 87-89 Carreras can easily see the big rectangular punchout in the dash, just to the left of the light switch. That is for the H4 leveling control wheel (it is not a switch).
