Default 1986 911 Carrera won't start?

86 911 3.2l stickshift won't start. Ran great when put away about a month ago. Now, the starter spins the engine just fine, but no firing.

Any ideas on what to do next? This is my brother-in-laws car. He just got it. I told him to get a plug and ground it to the frame and run a wire to it and see if he has spark...

Suggest you search for "DME Relay" here - first one to rule out and it is common.

+1 on DME relay. It's easy to change. It's under the drivers seat fastened to one of the mounting studs for the DME brain box. 10 mm nut.

My last two 'No-start' Carreras were not DME relay related. I agree, start there as it is the least expensive option and you should ALWAYS have an extra anyway if it turns out to not be the problem. If you swap it and still doesn't start, your next item to check are the RPM and CPS crank position sensor) sensors. They are identical magnetic sensors that take readings off of your flywheel. They are located on the transmission bellhousing, driver's side. The connector side of those sensors are found in the engine compartment driver's side there is a bracket attached to the intake manifold with one white connector (CHT cyl head temp) and two black. the two black are the ones you're looking for. Do a simple resistance test to determine which one is faulty. First pull the clip retainer so you can unplug the connectors, do one at a time so you do not mix them. They are brittle from age so be gentle...... once unplugged, orient the connector so you are looking at the pins with the two humps on the right (that will make sense when you are at this point.....) take and ohm meter and connect the bottom pin #1 to the middle pin #2 the reading should be 960 ohms +/- 96. If no or out of spec reading... replace it and she will fire. BTW if you order the 'Porsche' p/n 911-606-215-01-M14 it's $145+ if you order the identical 'BMW' p/n 12-14-1-708-619-M14 it's half that. That one is on the house :-)

Ok, brother-in-law put a grounded plug on spark plug wire and no spark. He's going to try the DME relay. Thanks everyone for the information, I'll keep you posted.

Mine went bad in a customer's parking lot. After a moment of panic it took about a minute to open the glove box, crawl under the seat, unplug one and plug in the other. I was on the road thinking I was lucky to have listened to my fellow Rennlisters.

It happened to me on my 86' Carrera 8 days ago. I parked the car in the driveway, everything was fine. I come back out and it doesn't want to start. The starter is doing its job, but the engine refuses to come to life. I replaced the DME relay on the spot, nothing. It turns out, it was the RPM sensor that went bad. It was the original one, so it had to go bad at one point.

My brother-in-law replaced his DME sensor, nothing... Had to have it towed. It was the rpm sensor(s). They were in bad shape. New ones on order. He is keeping the DME sensor in his glove box in case his present one fails. Seems like everyone should have an extra DME on board.

i think you mean DME relay ....

RPM sensor ? I imagine it is a Crank position sensor.

Who the hell are you to be welcoming anyone to the forum, troll? Turning this one in as SPAM.
