What to ask for my 1990 C4
I am selling my 1990 C4. It has sport seats and is in great condition. New Michelin pilot sport tires and 17" Boxter wheels. It has 84k miles on it with a new clutch and service. What should I ask for it? Thanks.
BTW I am going to buy a 996 turbo to replace it, I am not getting out of the Porsche community.

Will have answers for you. I think the NADA numbers are a very good starting point. Unfortunately the market is rather soft, a buyers market. .

Depends big time on how quickly you want to sell it. Used car market is so soft right now, and is a little softer for the C4 as compared with the C2. Also, potential issues with the 964's are "known" by buyers, although they are significantly overblown in my (and others who have experience) opinion. Sounds good regarding having had the clutch done, and mileage is good. Service records and lack of significant oil leaks will improve the value, and color combination will have an impact on pricing. I have seen C4's going as low as $17k, perhaps because the buyer can't wait any longer to sell it. On the surface it seems like you can get more for yours, but you will be competing with lower priced ones so it will take longer to get a higher price.
Regional variances also come into play. Seems like Southwest US and maybe FL cars get higher $$$ due to lack of adverse climate conditions on them. Then again, a C4 in the Northeast might be desirable if the buyer intends to use it year round.
$20-$24k?

The prices are tumbling further down too. Many Carreras now under 15k:

The 993 has become affordable too. I see them under 30k on higher mileage cars. Make sure you are far enough away from the 993 in price.

I don't trust the Kelly Blue Book for pricing Porsches. I've never found them to be accurate in the Porsche price world. I'm not sure about NADA either, although I've never tried to use them so I don't know if their pricing is accurate.
I think the best resources are in the ads themselves. Do a little research for similar vehicles and try to price yours accordingly. This is a good sight for that. Also autotrader.com. Also collectorcartraderonline.com.

If you look at ads, you will NEVER know what the seller will really get, leave alone IF they ever sell it. Just look at the f/s ads on rennlist. Most cars are seriously overpriced. Many people just give it a shot or are not in a particular hurry to sell their Porsches.

Sounds like NADA is the way to go then. I still don't trust KBB on Porsches. And I'll still stand by checking out other ads. I would agree that many are overpriced and may be "hopeful" sellers. But with enough info, I think there would be a good cross section to get a price range from.

Check out Black Book if you can get hold of one. They are availabe only to dealers and average actual auctioned vehicles. Only problem is that it only goes back to 97 (current year + 6). I can tell ya a 97 C4 averages $36200 wholesale as of August 03 issue.

Do a search on cars.com and see what others are listing theirs for. There is also a black book value button which you can click on and get those values. I sold my 90C4 cab with 66K miles 3 weeks ago. I listed it on cars.com for $27K and sold it within days for the asking price. I think I got an extremely good price, considering:
It was a theft recovery with an 8K odometer discrepancy
It had a ripped roof which was no longer operating electrically - had to manually raise and lower.
It had a pretty good oil leak.
Did not have 60K service or records prior to 3 years ago.
On the plus side, I had cup wheels and aero mirrors, and the exterior was in excellent condition. Also, it was black on black which sells well. I'd list it at $28 or 29K on cars.com with a VERY descriptive $45 ad which allows multiple pictures. I received lots of interest, so price it high... you might just get what you're asking. Of course, few people on this board would pay that much, but if you find the right person who is new to Porsches... At least 3 people told me that they just turned 40 and had always wanted a 911. I think that's the type you want to sell to.

Thanks for the input. I just listed the car in the Baltimore sun for $26k firm. It is on cars.com also. It starts Saturday. I will have to see. The car is in great condition. The sport seats are a big plus in selling a 911. The car has always been garaged. No cracks or tears in leather. Thanks again.

You should make that 26k negotiable. I doubt you will move it quickly with a firm price at that level. I wouldn't pay that for a C4. Also, my feeling is, that you should always have room to negotiate. If I see sellers with prices on the high side that put FIRM behind the price, I usually get turned off. I know I won't have to make the trip because there is no room to negotiate. I think you definitely would like to attract serious buyers and see if you can't make a deal, even if they try to get the price down. Maybe the market is better in Baltimore than in the Bay Area? To be honest I don't have to sell the car right away. I am really only willing to negotiate $1k. If I can't get $25k for it I will keep it and let it sit. I own 7 cars, this being the one I drive the least. I just spent about $7k in clutch, maintenance, wheels and tires. If someone is looking at one for $20, they will wind up putting a new clutch, flywheel and tires in it anyway. I am by no means taking offense to anything that was said, I am just in the position where if I don't get what I want for it I will just keep it and maybe let my brother drive it.

I just checked it out on www.edmunds.com they suggest that the car would sell for $21,000 in a private party sale. You could probably add a few bucks for the clutch and service but not as much as you paid.
KBB suggests that your car would list for $19,950 in mint condition.
Let us know what you finally get for it. There is always someone who will think its a steal. Timing and presentation are everything.
