Default Glad I Split the Case

I split the case on the SC engine today. I debated that for quite awhile, but went ahead.

I think I can definitely say it was not split when the engine mods were made sometime after 1985. All of the mains were dated sometime mid to late 1981. For the most part in good shape, except for one main half and one half of both intermediate shaft bearings that were odd. The main was odd, but no copper, the IM bearings had significant copper showing. See images.

The main shell doesn't look serious and the intermediate shaft bearing wear is quite common and normal over 100k mi.

Don't know the precise mileage, that's part of the problem. I have service records for the first two years and 25K miles, then a two year gap w/no records, then it picks up again with what I assume was a change in speedo head (to get rid of the 85mph one std. in 1982) and 8K plus miles. Mileage on that head now is 25K. So IF you can assume it continued the 12K miles a year during the gap that would make 75K total. But it may be more.

At some point engine torn down, maybe just the heads removed, to swap heads to the big port SC heads and intake. I have no miles nor receipts for that, I think the P/O was trying to hide that from his wife! Just guessing.

That's no real mileage for a bottom end known to easily go 300 k. Unless the oil changes were neglected.
