Default 84 vs. 87 911 G50 Transmission

I was just curious to get your thoughts on the difference in shifting between an 84 and 87 911 (if any). I recently drove an 84 (my students car at Lime Rock Park -- what a blast) and was wondering if the G50 transmission is easier to shift. I am looking to purchase an 87.

If no difference than that will be OK, but I would like to know. In any case I am sure I will be able to adapt from the modern Porsches to an 87.

I'm finding the 915 trans to be a lot a fun. I drove a g50 car about two years ago and it was much easier. The one I drove was a later 964 car. Every early car I've drove has been a 915.

I was at Lime Rock yesterday. Would have loved to go out on the track. It was a fun day.

If I'm correct, it is also easier to "upgrade" a 3,6 power plant with a G50

I like my G50 better than the 915. Just my opinion.

There is nothing wrong with a well-adjusted and sorted 915. Many need new couple bushings or cup bushings, and don't have the coupler adjusted correctly.

All of the above costs like $60 in parts and 2 hours of time, and a poorly shifting trans can be like new. If it comes down to overall condition of a possible purchase-go for the BEST CAR. Don't get hung up on 915 vs G50.

The 87 G50 will NOT feel anything like the box in your GT3.

I have an 88 and an 84. Throws are definitely longer, slower and more deliberate with the 915. Clutch pedal feels heavier as well. Really it comes down to efficiency vs. character and I love them both. Once mastered the 915 is fine to live with daily.
Either way the 3.2 Carrera in my opinion is the best driver of all the air-cooled cars.

Wait... the cable clutch on your 915 car feels heavier than the hydraulic clutch on your G50????

Reddy
My 84 is relatively new to me. Chances are that the Clutch does need some adjustment. Right now the pedal does seem stiffer than the 88 and engages too abruptly.

A new clutch cable can make it all feel like new.

My '88 has a factory short shift and could be described as cold blooded or slightly slow to downshift when cold. A couple miles in and she is a dream. Would not trade that tranny for the world.

My G50 was a little slow when cold too, then I put Mobil Delvac in it and it's much better. Shifts like a dream now.
I've only ever driven one 915 car, and didn't find it odd or difficult. But then again, I've driven some old International trucks with 4 gates and no feel whatsoever.
Before the flames start... no I'm not comparing a 915 to and old truck,

Ditto on the Mobil Delvac for the G50. Mine shifts like a dream since I put it in 7 years ago.
