I was looking at a 87 Carrera and I was told the A/C does not work. Does anyone have a range estimate of what it would cost to get fixed?

To update and fix or to remove ....that is the question.
to update it correctly and replace hoses and all it is a pretty big job and not fun. i had a preliminary estimate of about $1800.00 to do it while the engine was out. Mine had been "updated?"previously and re-plumbed in a crazy way. Even when the a/c "works great" on the early 911's it still doesn't really work all that well. I cleaned up the engine compartment and removed the pump and condenser but left the rest so it could be re-plumbed later if need be. Looks much cleaner and the windows and sunroof work just fine.
It comes down to how bad you need it and personal preference.
Good luck.....
i have an 88 coupe.

Rshea,
Thanks for the details. I thought it would be an expensive item to repair/upgrade.
Aratapuss, yea I had a feeling the A/C on an older P-car would not be optimal.
Hopefully, I will find an 86-88 to accompany my 996 GT3.

Why is does not work could be a few things:
A) No refrigerant due to common leaks: o-rings, non barrier hoses, compressor seal, evaporator
B) Blown fuse, bad relay, bad thermostat.
Repairs or upgrades can be quoted, but you need AC in your area during the summer, unless you want a garage queen.
Automobile Associates of Canton, 5 Albany Turnpike
Canton, CT 06019... would be the ideal shop to quote you repairs.

No, he doesn't need AC in Darien, CT during the summer. I bought my car in 2000, with the AC working perfectly. That is to say, it worked like crap compared with any other car I can remember ever being in, other than my father's 1960 Beetle, which didn't have AC, and my mother's 1963 Mercury station wagon, which was the first AC I can recall. Two years later, due to the perforated hoses, I needed a recharge of the R12, paid the fortune it cost, and two years after that needed another recharge, which I didn't bother to get, having hardly used the AC in the intervening two years. I generally drive with windows open so I can hear the engine and the exhaust when it's not too cold. Haven't had AC since and haven't missed it. Yes, there might be a few hot days on which I'll choose to take the other car, but generally it's no big deal. I avoid driving an '88 911 if it's likely I'll be stuck in traffic in hot weather anyway.
