Hello,
I am considering the purchase of a US spec 1979 911SC and would like to know if the "whaletale" spoiler was an available FACTORY option for this body type (Targa) and model year in the US. Any guidance would greatly be appreciated.
Regards,
Slfan

Pu911rsr,
Thanks for the post. I am suspecting that, despite the whaletale on my car being a Porsche original part, it was probably installed after delivery. Do you know for certain if the whaletale was an available factory option for the 79 SC Targa? I ask because I would of thought that it would only have been offered as a factory option on the Coupe and not on the Targa.

Quick question: does the installation of an original Porshe Whaletale require the removal of the engine lid grill? Or is the Porsche whaletale installed with the engine lid grill? Anybody know? Thanks!

Ok I stand corrected, the only spoiler available on a 79 non- turbo is the nasty black rubber thing, no front spoilers were available, surprised, seen so many SC with the turbo F&R spoilers.

There were several "whale tail" spoilers in the 1980s. The term does nothing to differentiate between them. The best description is offered in Paul Frere's book "911 Story" which gives factory test data on aerodynamic lift for each configuration. I would be surprised if Porsche did install a rear tail without also a front spoiler.

The white '79 Targa with the ugly rubber whaletail pictured above does have a rubber front chin spoiler as well, I assume it was factory installed.
AFAIK, the only 1974-89 911's with factory rear spoilers that didn't come with the front rubber lip were the '74 Carreras with a ducktail.
