Default Going Tail-Less

I'm going to park the tea-tray spoiler and go for a cleaner look on my 85 Carrera. If anyone has an OEM deck lid (silver would be great, not required) they're tired of tripping over, please PM or respond here. Thanks!

YOU PEOPLE! Now you've made me forgot what I was posting. Oh yes, "tail".

I can either plug the holes in my current decklid and repaint OR find a suitable decklid (used) and paint that one. Oh the dilemma. There are a zillion on ebay now, from new to thoroughly rotten, about $500 down to $175.

Anyway, if someone out there in Rlist world has a decklkid, I'm a buyin!

Check around on big city craigslist sites. We see them here all the time for about $300.

If you go ahead and buy a used decklid, not only will you not have to fill the holes, but you'll end up with a second decklid that is color matched and you'll be able to switch back later if you desire.

That is what I did... I have three tails to select from... duck tail, plain lid that we welded all holes and only has '911' on it, and the factory spoiler that the car came with (a lid with a heavy assss rubber spoiler)...

For those advocating the second lid approach, how easy is it to swap back and forth? Do people change lids like selecting which tie to wear to work, or is it more like a once in a decade when you really want something different kind of deal?

Off the top of my head, there is a seal, bumpers, convenience light, cross brace thing, latch, hinges, support shocks, grille, AC condensor, brake light (if you have the E.T. style), rear wiper, and so on. Maybe if resources allow, equip both lids with most of the provisions and only have to swap the big stuff like the AC condensor.

You can't switch back and forth without buying two engine lids. The reason is that the tail needs holes to mount through on the engine lid. But everything switches over fairly easily. The condensor is the same unless you run a rear wiper, in which case the condesor for the wiper can be moved to the regular engine lid because there is a sheet metal blockoff plate that goes where the condensor is notched around the wiper motor.

Judging from the guys on the forums and their posts, I'd say once a decade is about right.

Default decklids

Interchanging deck lids once fitted and used previously will require minor alignments. It's the additional work required to re-install the AC condensers which adds up to the process. As what they have said, retaining the original part will give you options in the future. I decided to keep the factory whale tail when I installed a duck tail so switching back will just be a weekend project to speak of. By the way, I am starting to get this tail addiction and I have been looking for an early carrera tail like the sample photo below.

Let me know if you know somebody selling one.

Now that we're progressing in the highly provocative issue of getting more tail (!), getting the second one makes good sense.

I actually have a ducktail on the wall of my little man cave now, and thought long about putting that one on, but began to like the hunkered down 'speedster' look. I know, to each their own, and I'm a fan of lots of different looks.

I am thus in the serious hunt for a second tail, with as much auxiliary stuff on it as allowed. Had two PMs from two very kind RLers today about such. Thanks very much for the input!

Couple pics as requested. You may notice:

1. My interior fell out.
2. My engine fell out.

Lots of 'things' being done to this car to re-commission for some good healthy usage!
