Oil product data
Hi All,
if anyone can share the low temp cranking & pumping vis, and High Temp High shear viscosity for the following oils I would appreciate it very much. The product data sheet from Manf. does not give this for some reason. Should you happen to know the Zn, P amts that would be great too. I am trying to make a decision on what to use to replace my Castrol GTX HiMile 20W-50. Thanks!
Valvoline VR-1 20W-50
Shell Rotella T-Triple protection 15W-40
Thanks,
Kalia

Here is a great link to everything you want to know about oil. It also has some great data (Flash point, low pour temp, ash and zinc content) for many brands of oil.
http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_oil.htm
I personally use Joe Gibbs Conventional 15W-50 oil (high Zinc content) in my 911 3.2 and use a mix of Joe Gibbs & 15W-50 Mobile One Synthetic in the 928S4.
Shell Rotella has changed the formula a few years back and doesn't have the same zinc content it once did, but is still a good oil (used this from the start in my 944). Rotella is the high detergent oil which may not be good for older engines that were running dinosaur oil for years. Unless the Valvoline VR-1 20W-50 says "Not Street Legal" on the bottle then it's no better than Castrol GTX 20W-50. Hope this helps

I did an oil change during Christmas Day from Castrol to Brad Penn 20W-50. I just noticed that engine temps are a little bit higher which I don't mind in winter so I can easily get it to operating temp. Will check during summer.

Ray, JQ thanks guys.
Ray, I was concerned about detergent and you just confirmed it. Mine is a old car as well (1982 911SC). Oh, can I borrow the car wash girl? Of course wife will kill me.

JQ. I use BP 20w50 in the Az summers and my car (83 sc with fresh top end) will run 190-195 in 100-110 ambient temps all day long. I use the 10-40 in the winter tho with the same exact pressures and temps just a tad cooler.

I think I will go with the Brad Penn 20W-50, as I won't be driving in the winter (at least for this season). I do want to get away from Castrol High Mileage, and I will start the spring with BP oil.
