Default Question on potential purchase *newbie*

Hi everyone

I am new to the boards and I am looking for some opinions/help on something. I recently found a very low mile (sub 10k) 1984 911 that had a 930 engine conversion years ago completed on it. They are asking in the 30’sk for the car, but I wanted to ask the experts here a few questions:

1. How much value is lost due to the conversion to the 930?
2. Does that price seem right to you? I would think it would be higher due to the low miles.
3. Is this just a too good to be true situation and I should think it is a scam?

I asked and the owner said it was original miles on both the car and engine. Any help/insight you may have on this would be great. This would be my first 911/Porsche as I have always wanted one.

THANK YOU!

Whoa.

IMHO, too good to be true.

Definitely have a PPI on this one to include checking the numbers.

Yeah, that is what I thought. Just curious, what do these cars normally go for or what do you feel the value of it may be? Thanks again!

Sorry, one thing I forgot to ask you. When you say numbers, you mean the body panels, engine parts, etc. What would be some of the biggest areas to check out to see if this is really legit? Thanks!

Im a bit confused, its a 84 carrera with a 930 turbo conversion? the body and engine both have sub 10K original miles... Is that even possible?

Is 30k really too good to be true for a conversion?

Yes, that is what I was thinking as well about the miles. I was told the conversion happened in the 80's and the car sat for many years in a garage.

Also, I was actually more interested in if it would be too good to be true if it had very low miles being 30+k. I am almost viewing the 930 conversion as a bonus.

Thanks again!

I think its to high.... people like stock cars, with maybe an upgrade here or there... a plus if its a 3.4. But putting a turbo engine in there is nul. No added value $$$ wise IMHO. For the few that is drawn to the mod... they think the same way, no added value money wise (not much anyway).

The question is the sellers claim. Both body and motor sub 10K... def need documents for this sort of stuff.

Documents help, but even so that conversion wouldn't even be sorted out at those low miles and makes the car not a collectible. I would be in low 20s... maybe.

Niche, when you say low 20's, are you talking $$ or estimated miles?

yarzy... look up the definition of "mark" in the dictionary... then look in the mirror...

Just kidding...

Seriously, with the prices of older Porsches going through the roof, all kinds of disreputable people are cobbling crap together... fishing for suckers.

The muscle-car market went through this years ago.

This is about the 5th "Franken-Porsche" that some noob has asked about on this forum in the last couple of weeks... check the posts... what's that tell you?

If you want an old Porsche, buy a fully documented car from a legitimate owner that has no "stories" or "issues".

Pay full market price, and be happy.... these are great cars and worth every penny. Generally, anything that looks like a "deal" is no deal... its fool's gold.

Has the car been flared out in the rear, whale tale, front chin spoiler? Basically all the "turbo look" components?

^^^^ That is what I was wondering. Any chance this is the original 3.2 engine with a turbo bolted on, hence the claim the miles are the same???

We did a lot of weird stuff in the '80s, but stuffing a CIS 930 engine into a DME Carrera wouldn't have been terribly high on the list. As Doug says above, I'll guess it's an aftermarket turbo like Protomotive. (Second most insane ride I've ever had was when Todd operated out of Sonoma Co., and let loose on a wet country road in such a 3.2L turbo conversion kit up to redline in 5th.)

In any case, more details about the car are in order to give a proper opinion. Ultimately though, I'll echo above that a car like this is likely an extremely poor choice for someone not deeply experienced in 911s.
