I just bought an 88 coupe and the OEM suspension is way too soft. The car is going to be a serious driver ed machine and then possible stock class club racer ( maybe two years from now). How should I proceed?
Thanks

Mousehouse,
I posted precisely the same question here about 3 weeks ago and got some excellent responses. I ended up with a set of adjustable Koni sport yellows, also had it lowered, aligned properly and some camber dialled in. I have left the torsion bars as standard but will do these as "phase II". I can tell you now, the difference is ASTONISHING over the stock setup. You won't be dissappointed. This is in Australian dollars (so divide this by .5), but the above mods where about $2,000 and getting the torsion bars installed will be about another $1,700.
Anyhow, enough of my story, look for the post titled "'89 Carrera 3.2 - Why's my suspension so SOFT!" on 06/18/2001.
Cheers, Victor

You really ought to upgrade the torsion bars at the same time you upgrade the shocks, as they work together. You can upgrade them separately, but just won't get the full combined benefit.
While you're in upgrade mode, upgrade to turbo tie rods, about $125 for parts. Significant steering improvement.
Get a second set of wheels and put "r" rated rubber on them. Kumho victoracers or Yoko a032r's are two choices. Michelin is supposed to be coming out with a new "r" compound tire in our lifetime sometime.
Add a rollbar or rollcage, racing seats or Recaro SRD's, 5 way harnesses...
If you have PCA Club Racing in mind in the not too distant future, be sure you look at the www.pca.org web site at the Club Racing rules. I believe POC has similar online rules. If you're going to upgrade, you should keep the series rules in mind, especially on things like wheel and tire sizes, for example.
