What be a reasonable offer for an 87 Carrera coupe with 270,000 miles
I'm in Toronto Canada and recently came across a very clean 87 red Carrera coupe with 270,000 miles. No service history unfortunately, but the engine runs strong, clutch is smooth, no weird sounds or vibrations.....a great looking runner with a very clean body. Has the original Fuch wheels....very period correct.
The driver's seat base seems to be the only part that shows wear.....will be easily restitched if I decide to purchase.
So 911 gurus, what shall I offer?
Thanks!

I think you could pick it up for less than $15K. Being that there is no paper trail with the car, many potential buyers will be scared away. What kind of miles make up the bulk of the 270K? The latest Panorama has a story of a 300K mile 993. No mention of a gearbox or engine rebuild in the story.
Is the seller the original owner?
What's the asking price? Also a pre-purchase inspection is a must to determine the condition of all the other components.

Ditto. Lack of documentation would definitely hurt a car with this kind of mileage. Over $20K, you should get a sub-200K mile car with full service history. This car sound like betting the rent money on Red at the casino... win big, lose big.
i'd throw $12K at the guy and see if he bites. This gives you some breathing room if a mechanical disaster emerges. IMHO anything over $15K is solidly in the "repent in leisure" territory.
Definitely get a full PPI before you close the deal.
There are a lot of really nice no-excuses Carraras out there... but very few "bargains".... don't marry the first girl that kisses you.
God luck.

I think that the owner needs to answer why there are no records. If there is no reasonable answer, then it maybe fool's gold. Keep in mind that an engine repair with you putting the labor is easily $12k. If the owner does not want to turn over any records whatsoever, then your offer should reflect that.

In reference to service records,i just want to add that i do all the maintenance on my car and i don't have ANY service records other than my yearly alignments for the last four years that i've owned my car ...
Does it make it a bad car ?
I haver close to 60K in my car so far and a pile of records from the PO which include oil changes, brake adjustments, battery replacements ... big deal, just get a proper PPI and offer the realistic value of a 270,000 mile car which would be in the 15K range !
Cheers

Yeah records are nice and add some security but is not the end of the world for me. Youd be very lucky to get. A g50 carrera in the TO market for sub 20. .
Good luck tho and hope it works out.

If you really like it, do your best to discover what it might need and plan on finding more once you drive it a while. If you get it at the right price and the body is straight and rust free then even a major engine repair is a little easier to accept if it's really your dream car. Just know this, at that mileage all the shocks, bushings, rubber gaskets, switches, you name it are all OLD, unless you are going to tear it down and cherry it you will likely have to deal with some ongoing gremlins (and not the AMC kind either)

a contrarian's view
Very high mileage older P-cars with no service history should obviously be subjected to an intense PPI. But I believe such cars should be screened on the basis of body and interior needs. Frankly, setting the body/paint/interior "right" can be far expensive than fixing mechanical needs.

If nothing really bad is found during a PPI, and it could be had for less than $15K, if it was me I would take the plunge.

Of course evidence of having spent 60k should show in the condition of the car should show that too.

Are you buying an odometer or a car??? Have the car checked out by a competent Porsche mechanic and make your decision based on his findings. 270000klm is only a little over 10000 k per year if my math serves me correctly . I think I would be more leary of a lower Klm car.

as a point of reference; I just purchased an '84 3.2 with 73,000 MILES for $18,500 usd and it had a semi-documented history, I did do a PPI and it checked out fine.
I think for a non-documented, 270,000 MILE car....$12,000-$14,000 sounds about right!
