Default 83 911 timing

I had to get my car smogged and retard the timing. It's running too lean. The shop I normally take it to had it advanced to about 16*. Where should I set it to? Engine warm I'm sure? Set at idle with vacuum lines plugged?

Ok, the timing light is showing one mark and it is lined up. I assume this is 5*?

should be two marks on the pulley...Z1 is top dead center...to the right you see another mark with a 5 below...that's your timing mark.

Thanks for all your help guys.

I have a mark on the inside of the pulley and one on the outside, but there are no marks. It looks like the one on the inside sits just to the left of the one on the outside, but I'm not sure.

an '83 sc should have the marks....I'd suggest getting 2 books:
Bentley Porsche 911 SC manual and
101 Projects for your Porsche 911

I double checked and the two marks on the inside and outside of the pulley are it, plus on the fan.

The engine went through a full rebuild. Maybe the shop used a different pulley?
