Default Speedometer removal?

Just bought a 1974 911 and need to fix the speedometer. What is the best way to remove the gauge? I can almost reach it from the front trunck. If that is the only way I will need to remove a bunch of the blower and tubing.

Any one been there before?

I believe yours is the same is the later ones where it just pops out of the front.
So...Get a wide flat screwdriver and gently pry it around the edges of the speedo until it comes out. Do not focus on one area but move around it.

Be careful not to damage any of the surrounding trim. Perhaps you can use something to place against the trim so that when you use it as leverage, it will not mark or damage it. Take your time.

Hope this helps

Bill,

I just bought a speedometer to replace the 85 mph speedo in my '81 SC. Do you know whether I need a different sender for the "faster" speedometer?

Thanks,
Richard

Just got it out and it was really easy. I thought it would be held in from the other side with some sort of clamps. Thanks for the suggestions! Now I need to get it repaired or replaced. The odometer is not working and I think there is a gear inside that is broken. I heard that this is the place to get it fixed:

Does anyone have a suggestion for locating a good service manual? I want a Bently manual, but they don't have one for the 1974 911.

Thanks again!

I would also like to know about installing the speedo in the 81'. I am sitting on a 150mph speedo and want to pull out my 85mph in my 81' too. Just swap them? Anything else we need to do?

I believe that the speedo on the SC has a sender code stamped on the housing. Your replacment unit needs to have a matching code to be compatible with the sender installed. Perhaps another rennlist reader can correct me on this if I am mistaken.

I used a feeler gauge and a flat screwdriver to remove the speedo and tach in my SC. Put the feeler next to the rubber lip then put the screwdriver on top and slide under the rubber. Move it around to different areas, don't try to lift it all at once. When you put it back in, use armor-all as a lube so that if it isn't sitting where the numbers are horizontal you can still move it around til it looks right. The armor all will eventuall dry. Also, if you change the speedo face, you need to have the speedo re-calibrated to match your sending unit. The speedo shop should know what you have vs what you now need and the process is simple.

Very cool. I'll check them out. What about the temp. gage? Got one out of a 911 S. Has actual temp. instead of the mystery bar. Same place or, is all good?

When it comes to Porsche gauges, the folks at N. Hollywood are darned good. They can tell you about any changes needed to go with the "S" temp gauge. Possibly a sender change, but I'm not sure...if you're close enough, and not tool handy, they might even do all the work you want done. Again, I'm not sure though. My dealings with them have been "mail order", and I've always been pleased with the results.

It would be mail order for me too. Hollywood is about 7 hours away from me. I am in northern California. Thanks for the help. Gonna give them a call.

This weekend I got the speedometer out and repaired the odometer. It was a challenge to get the front cover off, but the instructions from this link helped to make it work great without buyng anything.

Thanks to Wayne R. Dempsey for the great instructions.
