Question Thoughts on '86 and '87 911 I'm considering

I have found two 911's for sale (not listed though!) in my area.
What would you peg price ranges on these:

'86 Targa - seems to be REALLY well sorted. Is a daily driver currently.
White on red interior
Mileage: Just over 400,000km (yup, you read it right!!!)
The compression test (a few years old: 96%, 95%, 94%, 92%, 95%, 92%).
Rennshift shifter
Delrin bushings
Wong Chip
M&K Exhaust
Sport cup tranny mounts
Bilstein shocks
17" x7 front, x9 rears Fuchs (better tire selection)
Has LSD
New Dash
Recovered front seats
Everything down to the clock functions
LED interior lights (less load on alternator)
Headlight Relay kit
Recovered Targa Top
Carrera Script
Rennaire 134a Retofit A/C system
Completely overhauled heating system, including new heater boxes

'87 Carrera
Guards Red / Black
250,000mi
Exterior: 8-9/10 (paint is unbelievable, Fuchs are decent, a small crack in one of the rear rubber bumper covers...)
Interior is showing it's age, no cracks in dash, just some minor wear on seats, no tears or anything, just "old" - but hey, it's an old car right?
Engine - completely redone (still waiting for specs) - dual exhaust - apparently previous owner spent north of $30,000 on a rebuild, SS components, etc.
Spoke to a shop that services the car they said it's a VERY strong car, never had to do any engine repairs, only the odd electrical wiring for some gauges which have been repaired.

Sorry I don't have more info on the '87 Carrera.

My plan with either car, daily driver - some highway, not very long drive in, I only put 15-20,000km on my car all year... Even less with a Carrera as won't be taking it, kids, wife, dogs, bikes etc to the cottage!!!

I haven't had a chance to drive either car yet - so, duh, gotta drive 'em - my gut tells me to stick with the '86 - I know it's been very well taken care of, and likely would be a "start it up and drive" car.
Another part says go for the G50 '87 - it's red and shiny , engine sounded unbelievable, and if it's as well sorted mechanically as he says, would do well on resale (not that I buy a car for the next guy).

Prices for the two are right around $20k.

Then, there is a '90 Carrera 4 as well, but a few grand more...
(A little more worried about repair costs of the C4 vs the 3.2) - I'll save that comparison for another day!!

Default My vote - the 87

Assuming it is a coupe, you will be happier with a coupe over the Targa.

I have seen these model years going for around 17-18k , I would try to negotiate on prices, go to EBay see some of the auctions. In sum when buying any car it is best to know the history, wait for the right car and buy it. Hope it helps.

The two look about equal to me, though 400k kms on the targa without a documented rebuild would raise some concern. Leakdown numbers from 4% to 8% are within spec, but would need to be rechecked before purchase. Targas are tons of fun in nice weather, but I wonder why someone would spend money on an aftermarket A/C setup on a targa, especially in Toronto. I have both a G50 and a 915 and honestly, the G50 shifts easier but is not any more fun to drive than the 915 so I wouldn't let that sway you.

Thanks for the input.
I never got a chance to drive the '86 or '87, but took the family and drove a 964 today - a really well sorted one.
Loved it.
My wife REALLY wants me to drive something with airbags, so I think I'm gonna have to go forgo the 911 3.2 dream. The 964 was a blast, sounded amazing, and is quite comfortable...
Now to convince my wife to let me buy it!!

I respectfully, and humbly, suggest that you contact Amazon.com and place an order for the 8th Edition my book, The Used 911 Story. Lot's to know about that '90 964!

You can save yourself a lot of time and effort if you read them before you even start looking for a car.
