Default front condensor blower

hello,

i have a few questions about the a/c accessories on my 86 carrera.

1. does the front condensor blower motor run all the time when the a/c is switched on, or is it a coolant temp/ pressure dependant.?

2. where does the blower motor relay get its power from?

3. if it is a temp / pressure switch, where are these switches?

thanks

The blower works all the time when the A/C is switched on. It is very common for the motor to freeze up and die. You could try to replace just the motor or the entire assembly. (I did the later.) Make sure that it isn't a bad fuse first and that you are getting power to the motor.

Noel,

thanks for the reply. i am going to replace the fan motor as it makes some noise and is on its last leg. but...it isnt turning on when the a/c is on. do you know what triggers the fan relay to turn on, i dont think i am getting power to the relay. i can wire it on all the time, but that will just wear out the motor faster. any idea on where to wire it to only run with the a/c on?

I don't know where to wire it. However, I do know that mine stopped working and it turned out to be a bad fuse that still looked good. Be sure to check them carefully.

Yeah, those fuses will fool you some times! Just put a new one in to be sure.

You might pull the complete fan out and look it over first. I recently bought a new motor for mine because the old one was making a loud humming sound. When I pulled the fan out there was a piece of gravel in the fan cage which was throwing it out of balance - took the gravel out and the motor turned out to be fine.

There's an update for the harness for that fan. It adds an inline fuse just for the fan. Apparently there were some problems related to the fan causing fires, so the factory put out the harness/fuse update. I think Pelican and Zims sell them.

The front condensor blower only runs when the compressor is engage. When the compressor cycle off, the blower motor is also off. The temperature switch controls how often the compressor cycle on and off.
