Whale Tail...to keep or not to keep.

Whale Tail...to keep or not to keep.
I've got a Carrera 3.2 that came with a turbo tail courtesy of a previous owner. I've been toying with the idea of replacing it with an original, but then it occurred to me that the car might in fact be better without a tail. Anyone have thoughts on the topic? Aside from the esthetics, any benefit to having a 50 lb tail in the US where one is generally limited to sub 80 mph? Seems like performance should actually improve without it...

i say definitely get rid of the turbo tail .. looks out of proportion on a non widebody car .
Now whether to get a Carrera tail or go with no tail at all is really a personal choice. The no tail looks more classic the duck looks good on some cars and the Carrera tail looks a little more modern ( when compared to the no tail ) . That one is really about what you want as it is your car and yours is the only opinion that counts.

I just picked up a very nice carrera tail to replace the turbo tail on my narrow body '87. It must have been a craze as it does look quite out of proportion on the skinny cars. I'm wondering if I can talk my better half into letting me buy a turbo to go with the turbo tail. Wish me luck.

I know that, but my better half doesn't . Anyways, I thought a funny quip in light of the absurd thread we're all enjoying about a guy who doesn't like cars anymore but wants to buy one. In all seriousness, my skinny targa is more than enough car for my humble driving abilities. No turbo required. Will find a nice home for the turbo tail once it has been retired.

Just kidding. Interestingly the Turbo tail was created out of necessity. The engine cover could not close over the intercooler so Porsche needed something to cover the protruding component. The reason for the lip around three sides is to direct more air into the lid for the intercooler and to help compensate for the generally hotter turbo engine compartment conditions.

One good thing about them though; they made (make) a great "picnic table" at the races or tailgating at football games. Just throw a tablecloth over it and you have a great stand-up bar table. Right now with my garage queen it's a great shelf!
But it's going when the car is running again - that's the first priority.
