Default 1972 911T engine- injected?

First post here in this forum, I am looking at a 72T that has Webers on it- I think it should be Bosch MFI- am I remembering right?

Thanks for any responses- havent been in the 911 world for while

The US T's were MFI, Euro T's ran Zeniths. Lots of MFI set up were removed for Weber's as it was much cheaper than rebuilding MFI pump when they went south.

Yes that replacement scenario sounds familiar. I would guess that is the story here.. I would also guess it brings down the value of the car, even in today's crazy market...

Thanks for answer Phil. I will see if it helps negotiate the price to a more realistic number...

The flip side is that the "T" MFI engines only ran well after a properly jetted set of Webers were installed............. If the PMO CARB E.O. was never granted, hard to say how few would have survived into even the early '80s here in CA. (Back then you had to have everything post-'67 smogged.)

Ken, did the mfi run that badly? This car does run well with the Webers, so its more of an authenticity thing. I dont mind the switch myself, if it makes them run better...

Thanks

Talk to someone who knew them when new. I entered this stuff in '80, and even then the Ts were cursed in CA because of the smog passing issues. Honestly, I worked on so few since PMO came to the rescue shortly after that, and it was cheaper to talk a customer into a conversion/sell the car/install a CIS engine than flog away with the MFI.

If the MFI system is in perfect condition: pump & throttle bodies, it can run VERY well.

If its not perfect, they drive better with a decent pair of Webers or PMO's.

Fortunately, now there are people who can make the pump work correctly with today's gasoline, as well as rebuild the throttle bodies.

Steve, this car doesnt have any of the mfi system with it- searching around, I dont see much for sale to replace whats missing- do you have a source for these parts? Can you give me a cost estimate for replacing the pump and manifolds with air filters?

Thanks

Back in the early '80's I had a Euro 1972 911T-V (V = vergasser = Zenith carbs) and it ran extremely well. It was noticeably quicker than the 3 or 4 MFI injected 2.4 911T's I drove back then. The 1972 USA-spec 911E that replaced it was a much faster car, though. That one I should have kept!

It actually runs surprisingly well- someone did a good job setting the carbs. These are Webers, not Zeniths. Dont know if that makes a difference, but it idles well, doesnt ave any flat spots, and has good tip-in response. I have driven a E that was running well, and it did have more power, as it should. I'm just thinking of authenticity for resale later...
Thanks!

MFI stuff is notoriously challenging to find anymore and all due to high demand. You'll find used systems & parts on the Early S Registry forums, Pelican Classifieds, and at the bigger swap meets around the country. Nothing is cheap anymore so don't be shocked at prices as well as rebuild costs. I'd budget around $6-7K to do this properly.

I had one 72 T with MFI and car ran great. It would take a very t nice T to make it worthwhile to reinstall in my estimation. If I bought car I keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on a used set up, it may be worth at some point in time to re-install.

Thanks for all your replies- this car needs a front pan, front fender, lower valance, complete strip and repaint with seals, wheels refinished, windshield, etc... the engine seems be in good shape- just minus the MFI. The interior is complete, original, in fair shape. Its a Targa, needs headliner.
Its at a dealer in Monterey, and on ebay. Asking 32k... Looking at recent sales, this seems way too much without the MFI. Unrestored MFI cars seem to go in 50k range, where a clean T goes around 30- 35k. Not sure its a worthwhile investment...
But I appreciate the info- it will help me find the right car, eventually.
Thanks again
Steve
