Default 911SC Shift Linkage Spring

Guys,

I have an '83SC with a stiff clutch pedal. While inspecting the underside I discovered that a spring on the linkage at the trans is broken (#21 in the image). I assume this helps in actuating the clutch pedal. Is that correct?

Thanks,

Yes . This is called the OMEGA spring . it is kind of strange in how it works and is easier to watch than describe. But yes overall it does help with activation.

It was broken on my 84 as well, and I didn't know it. Left us stranded when the clutch would not engage. Not too terribly expensive but can be a bit tricky to install. Watch your fingers!

It's stout, that's for sure. I usually wear safety glasses anytime I'm underneath the car, just to protect from falling dirt.

Keep in mind that the OP's car might also need a clutch cable. Are records available? Also, examine the bowden tube section of the cable (the black housing that curves along the left side of the transmission). Does it say "Made In West(ern) Germany" in white letters on it? If it does, you have a junk after market cable; plan on replacing it along with the Omega spring.

Be sure to get an o.e. cable! Also, if the clutch has been stiff to operate for a while, consider a new bushing, plastic o.e. not brass, for the clevis pin.

Pete,
Why do you not like the brass replacement?

Here's a guide you can use when replacing the spring: Replacing Your Clutch Helper Spring

Also another good reference for your '83SC, Clutch Cable Replacement instructions. This is a very worthwhile DIY - you'll feel the difference!

Is it pretty obvious when the spring is broken? My clutch ('86) is a bit stiff and a little jerky and I'm hoping it is just the cable that needs to be lubricated a bit. Would you know for sure if you have a helper press the clutch petal while watching it's movement at the arm?

Thanks,

Franny

Mileage on car? Original cable? Type of use (town, open road, etc.) car has had?

You don't "lube" clutch cables. Use a high quality amber grease, on the section of the new cable that fits inside the tunnel, that's a "lifetime" install. After the clutch gets heavy from high mileage (80K + miles) on a cable; replace it. A visual of the Omega spring will tell you its condition, compare yours to a parts book picture and look for one or two broken leafs.
