Default Gauge fogging up? What causes this?

So the last few days one single gauge on my '87 911 has been fogging up -- at least I think that is what it is doing...but it is only the one gauge - all the others are fine? Is this because the plastic is delaminating from the glass??? What would cause it to look foggy like this?

Might take a hair drier and gently warm up the face of the gauge. If the "fog" dissipates, you probably have moisture in the guage. Not sure how it would get there or how to remove it.
If that is not the issue I am not sure what it would be.

Generally, it is the fuel gauge that gets "foggy".

Same happens to my gauge, the tachometer just like yours. I have a Targa and live by the ocean, If I leave the car outside and the top off, the next day my gauges fog. Usually goes away after two days of driving in the heat.

Design flaw. If you look in the frunk, you can actually see the backside of the gauges, which means the metal cases are exposed to the ever changing temperature and humidity of the frunk, while the glass fronts are in the relatively (and I do mean relatively) climate controlled cabin. Over the years, the gauges have become less airtight, humid air gets inside, and you get condensation.

One of the 911's charms and excentricities. Be happy, you are driving a car that is totally unlike any other.

You might pop the gauge out of the dash and heat it with a hairdryer. If you need to, remove one of the needle units with the two screws, and direct some hot air into the gauge to dry it out.

This happens after parking in a humid environment at night, then taking it out the next day.

i dont think there was any real intention to make them air tight .. in fact if you pop the bulbs out as you may have to change them time to time you can see rightinto the guage. Its all about hmidity and air flow , it will go away on its own and happens time to time. I once went out on a humid night and forgot to totally latch the front trunk . instant fog, aas it drives in and into the guages .. 10 minutes later it was gone , no biggie ..

Related question ... Do I have an unusual or a "part of the charm" air leak in the frunk ...when I had the speedo out for repair and drove the car, there was lots of air blowing in through the speedo slot. Thoughts or experience on this?

That air whistling sound means your frunk is open. Either that, or the ladies are impressed.

I think all of the 911s have some kind of opening to the outside in the smuggler's box where the steering linkage exits. Air from there could easily vent into the passenger cabin if a gauge is removed.

definitely from time to time when i leave that front trunk open on the safety the first thing i notice is air coming through the gages. I would check just to make sure the seal is in place and is in good shape.

I had my gauges cleaned and re-calibrated at Palo Alto and they said that they would seal and place a small bag of desicant in the back of the gauges, never had the fogging problem again. (shoulder shrug)

So does this go into the "Ummm.....that's weird" category? So I mentioned my temp gauge was fogging and then noticed the temperature needle was not working....now the temp gauge is working again and the gauge does not fog up anymore?????
