Default Budget for motor, transmission & clutch rebuild?

1884 3.2 is still running relatively strong at 235k miles, transmission is OK but a bit balky when it's cold, car is on its 2nd clutch according to records I have. But, this is my DE car, so it's getting hard use at times. I have 5 more months of car payments, then I will be able to tap my retirement account for a low cost loan from myself.

Rough guesstimate of cost of drop, motor rebuild, transmission rebuild, clutch, and re-install?

I would like to trailer the roller back home and work on some hard to get at stuff while the power unit is done.

in racing context, the answer is two more questions: how fast do you want to go and how much do you have to spend?

As long as you don't miss a shift, and dont chew up your syncros, I'd think that you will not have to worry about anything for a long time still.

I would budget $15-16K for a proper engine rebuild at that mileage and about $4K for the transmission and clutch. DE use requires some careful preparation for long-term durability.

Ouchie. I was hoping more around $8-10k for the engine; trans and clutch sounds OK.

Maybe I should just buy 24allen's racecar, and relegate mine to backup?

That's why I bought a new rebuilt lump...locally from a very fair indy shop a 3.0 top end starts at 6k, total rebuild is 12k IF nothing needs replacing or major work...the average is 14-15 k.

That's just the motor.

Steve was on the money.

I spent about $18K on my motor alone. That was me doing the labor. I may've gone a little overboard, but it ended up with a "bit" more power at the end.

How many $$ per hp gained?

I think I will just keep driving it and changing the oil religiously. Maybe get the trans and clutch rebuilt, as the shifts take some of the fun out of it.

That seems to make more sense , unless you are billowing oil out the back , low compresion or have other obvious issues there is nothing really to be gained by rebuilding on milage alone.

Redo your gearbox and see if you can spend some money to beef it up or help it out as you have a track car ..

A good bump in HP would be B&B headers and a chip, and premium fuel. Then, there is the diet plan-lose a couple of hundred pounds, and the car behaves nicely.

I agree with Iceman.

Local Porsche owner in my town has 418,000 miles on his SC.

1st rebuild was at 250,000 after it started leaking like the Valdez and killing mosquitos.

At 400,000 miles he had a glass out repaint and upgraded the A/C.

Minor seepage only, it uses about 1/2 qt of Brad Penn per DE weekend, already has been interior & AC stripped, has cat delete & Steve Wong chip, runs on ethanol free premium 93. I kind of like having heat, especially defroster heat.

My experience was that there was a big gain going from cat bypass to headers. I stated B&B headers, which are available with heat. I used my defrost too, on cold morning drives as DE's.
