Default Oil Cooler idea

I have searched the archives for the numerous discussions on oil coolers. My 76 911S runs hot and while I have a list of things to check, I know I don't have the external cooler options, not even the trombone.

Question, has anyone ever repalced the AC condensor in the rear deck lid with an oil cooler? Assuming the engine compartment is reasonably well sealed the fan should pull fresh air into the cooler first which will pre-heat the cooling fan air some, I don't know what the thermo exchange rate would be. The fan would actually pull air thru the cooler without a separate fan.

The lines would be nice and short though the long line sets seem to be no small part of the trombone cooler. Done in rubber like the AC lines it would be slick, just wondered if it had been tried.

Thanks for any advice. js

How hot is "hot"? Does your car have thermal reactor exhaust? Those are designed to run hot to burn off exhaust gasses. A remote oil cooler is always recommended but not completely necessary for a stock 2.7. If your oil temp is consistently running well above 210 degrees under normal driving conditions and moderate ambient temps, you may have some other problem. The oil cooler should ideally be mounted in an area with cool airflow (front of the car). The engine grille area mounting would cause the heated air from the cooler to be pulled into the engine cooling fan which would be less than ideal for engine cooling.

Why reinvent the wheel? What you are wanting to do will just preheat the air that is used for cooling now.

Do you have an 11 blade or 5 blade fan? Big difference in the two.

11 blade fan. I am new to the car and really can't use it til temp is sorted. Car rumored to have sat for years and a shrewd RL member suggested pulling shroud to look for nests.

I really dread pulling the cis to get the shroud so I'm collecting tasks so I will feel better taking to shop. Needs xmission anyway. Js

step 1) rent a borescope. You're welcome.

Uh, yeah.

Everything you're thinking about re: 2.7 cooling was done by the early '80s. And it's 30 years past that.

Have you done Amy of the investigations suggested previously? T-stat, checking for rodent nests under shroud, etc?

Pull the alternator and look behind it. That's better then pulling the shroud. If you find something in there, then do the shroud.

I wasn't suggesting pulling the shroud, unless an inspection behind the alt showed something. The point is there could be crud under the shroud.

I think getting the oil cooler is a great goal, and worth looking at all options, as suggested.

After that, I would seriously consider an external finned oil cooler with a fan if you live in hot climates. The ultimate is a front mounted cooler in the front bumper, but that's extreme.

No doubt-Elephant Racing would be a good place to look. But, outside of the engine compartment.

I had B and B external cooler with fan installed at time of engine rebuild of 83 SC. Pelican part # PEL-BBKT4. Mounted in right front wheel well. Replaces trombone cooler and requires remount of horn. It is pricey but mechanic commented on quality of B & B build and and straight-forward installation. It has worked well for HOT North Carolina summers. Good luck, tpd
