Default Question for CV experts

I recently replaced both inboard CV joints due to boots cracking. When I removed the joints, I inspected the races, and found inner (race/hub?), where the bearings seat, pitted. Replaced the joints. The new flanges are the 6mm width with the insert for the gasket. I installed gaskets at stub axle flanges and the boot flanges, (2 gaskets per joint). Installed schnorr washers, (no torque distribution washers as this is an 83 SC, before I read the longest CV joint thread in history, more on that later). Torqued all bolts, new, 50mm to 33 ft lbs. in criss-cross pattern. Drove the car. Let sit for a week, came back and checked torques. A couple of bolts needed a .25 to .50 turn. Decided I'm going to install new schnorr washers with new torque distribution washers and new longer (55mm) bolts to ease my paranoia about axles suddenly flying loose behind my butt. My question is, do I need to remove the joints and replace the gaskets, (pain), or can I simply remove 2 bolts at a time and install the torque distribution washers, aka "moon plates", the new schnorr washers and longer bolts, snug them, move to the next two bolts until all are replaced, then torque to 33 ft lbs. and call it good, without removal of the CV joint?

Thanks for reading,
John

You can do the bolts a couple at a time, no need to disassemble.

For the record, I go with reman axles as I got older. The time and crud dealing with CV component replacements just isn't worth my time.

Thanks Ed and Ice. I was hoping someone would say that. Yeah Ed, I did consider replacing both axles as the outer cv joints probably are not far behind the inner ones, but I also have a alternator issue I realized I need to address right before I replaced the joints. Being on a budget forced me to do a couple at a time. I'll probably being asking questions about alternator replacement/rebuild later.

OK; question. When I took the axle shafts out of the '82 SC there were no moon plates anyplace (inner or outer). I was curious about that as I remembered them from the old 914-6 days. Are they supposed to be there in '82 or not? I sort of gathered from this thread that they are.

Personally, any form of locking help is a good thing, IMO.

What Ed says is gospel. Make sure your threads are clean as they can be.

John, you might want to try a metal zip tie on the axle seal of the CV boots.

@ rusnak, so you don't think the plastic zip tie will hold up? I got the metal clamps that came with boots, just don't have the pliers. Just seemed like plastic zip ties would work and were simple.
